Holmes Named Sport Excellence Recipient; Three Ravens Earn Spots on NE-10 Academic All-Conference Teams

RINDGE, N.H. (April 6, 2016) – Junior Jon Holmes (Albany, N.Y.) of the Franklin Pierce University men’s track & field team has been named his sport’s Sport Excellence award winner by the Northeast-10 Conference, as announced on Wednesday by the Conference office. In addition, Holmes, along with women’s basketball senior forward Kara Charette (Fairhaven, Mass.) and men’s ice hockey sophomore forward Jonathan Haun (Buffalo, N.Y.), has earned Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference honors. The selected Ravens were among 62 student-athletes across seven sports honored by the Northeast-10.

(February 16, 2016) – Senior Kara Charette (Fairhaven, Mass.) of the Franklin Pierce University women’s basketball team has been named Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week, as announced on Monday by the league office. In addition, sophomore Tom McGuckin (Clayton, N.J.) of the men’s ice hockey team has been named Northeast-10 Co-Goaltender of the Week and four other Ravens have landed on the Weekly Honor Roll in their respective sport.

WINCHENDON, Mass. (February 9, 2016) – In a game which featured little scoring and less flow, a breakaway early in the second period provided the only necessary scoring, as the Franklin Pierce University men’s ice hockey team tallied a 2-0 victory over Daniel Webster in non-conference play. Senior forward Paddy Murphy (York, Maine) went top-shelf on the second-period break, while senior forward Matt Batis (Lakewood, N.Y.) popped an empty-net goal in the third period to seal the deal on Tuesday night at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.

WINCHENDON, Mass. (February 6, 2016) – In a seesaw affair on Saturday night, the Franklin Pierce University men’s ice hockey team led 2-0, trailed 3-2 and ultimately played to a 3-3 tie with Southern New Hampshire in a Northeast-10 Conference contest at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. With the goaltender pulled for the extra attacker, it was sophomore forward Blake Manginell (Troy, Mich.) who scored the game-tying goal with 56 seconds to play in regulation.

In addition, sophomore Tom McGuckin (Clayton, N.J.) of the men’s ice hockey team has been named Northeast-10 Goaltender of the Week and sophomore guard Jemma Thacker (Aldgate, Australia) of the women’s basketball team has been named to the Northeast-10 Weekly Honor Roll.

FOXBORO, Mass. (February 2, 2016) – Senior forward Brendan Glynn (Quincy, Mass.) scored twice on Tuesday night, but it was not enough for the Franklin Pierce University men’s ice hockey team, which suffered a 3-2 defeat at Stonehill in Northeast-10 Conference play at Foxboro Sports Center. Senior forward Willy Baker scored the game-winning goal for Stonehill, as he broke a 2-2 tie at the 2:32 mark of the second period.

(January 30, 2016) – Sophomore forward Anthony Langevin (Albany, N.Y.) had the game-winning goal in the second period and sophomore goaltender Tom McGuckin (Clayton, N.J.) notched a 27-save shutout on Saturday night to lead the Franklin Pierce University men’s ice hockey team to a 2-0 win over Daniel Webster in non-conference play at Conway Arena.

(January 28, 2016) – With the stage all to themselves on Thursday night -- no other Northeast-10 Conference teams in any sport played on the day -- the Franklin Pierce University men’s ice hockey team and Stonehill put on a showcase contest at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. In a game which featured end-to-end rushes, 40-plus saves for each netminder and just two penalties, Stonehill senior forward Garrett White and Franklin Pierce sophomore forward Brad Riccardi (Scarsdale, N.Y.) traded third-period goals as the two teams played to a 1-1 tie.

(January 24, 2016) – A strong first 20 minutes was offset by a lackluster final 20 minutes on Sunday afternoon for the Franklin Pierce University men’s ice hockey team, which saw a 4-0 second-intermission lead evaporate into a 4-4 tie with Southern New Hampshire in Northeast-10 Conference play at Verizon Wireless Arena. Sophomore forward Kyle Valliere scored twice, including the game-tying goal to key the SNHU comeback effort.

(January 16, 2016) – The Franklin Pierce University men’s ice hockey team and SUNY Geneseo played each other even over the final 40 minutes on Saturday afternoon, leaving the four-goal first for the homestanding Knights of SUNY Geneseo as the difference at Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena. Junior forward Stephen Collins -- the team’s leading scorer -- had his third career hat trick to lead SUNY Geneseo to a 6-2 win in non-conference play.

WINCHENDON, Mass (January 9, 2016) – Leading 2-1 after the first period and 3-2 after the second, the Franklin Pierce University men’s ice hockey team could not seal the deal on Saturday night at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. Instead, Suffolk rallied for the lead with a power-play marker and a shorthanded tally, and then added an empty-net insurance goal to skate away with a 5-3 win in non-conference play. Senior forward Justin Selep put home the empty-netter to cap his first collegiate hat trick.

BIDDEFORD, Maine (January 2, 2016) – The Franklin Pierce University men’s ice hockey team took a 2-1 lead midway through the second period on Saturday afternoon, but University of New England scored the next three goals at Harold Alfond Forum, as the Ravens suffered a 5-3 defeat in non-conference play. Freshman forward Brady Fleurent scored twice in the win for UNE.

BOSTON (December 12, 2015) – Goals came early and often inside Steriti Memorial Rink on Saturday night and, ultimately, a pair of power-play goals allowed the Franklin Pierce University men’s ice hockey team to claim, and then maintain, the lead in a 5-4 win at Suffolk. Sophomore forward Jonathan Haun (Buffalo, N.Y.) (2-1-3) and junior forward Connor Mauro (Shrewsbury, Mass.) (1-2-3) tallied three points each in the non-conference win for the Ravens.
