Field Hockey Falls in Season Finale at Pace, 7-2

Christine Jarowicz

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (November 12, 2022) -- The Franklin Pierce University field hockey team wrapped up its 2022 campaign on Saturday afternoon, with a trip to Pace for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Sophomore Caity Hazley (Kingston, Mass.) and senior Christine Jarowicz (Kennebunk, Maine) found the net -- the latter in her final collegiate game -- but the Ravens suffered a 7-2 loss at the hands of the Setters. Senior Eliza Stevens scored three times -- her first career hat trick -- in the victory for Pace.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce closes out its season at 4-14 (3-10 NE10). Pace improves to 11-7 (8-5 NE10) and heads into next week's NE10 Championship as the seventh seed.

Pace took some of the drama out of things early, with three goals in the opening six minutes of the contest. Stevens had the first two of the afternoon, as she struck for her third of the season with an unassisted tally just 49 seconds into the proceedings, and later finished off an assist from sophomore Krista Dietz in the fourth minute. It was three goals in the opening 5:22 for the Setters, as sophomore Noelle Meij set up the third of the year for senior Eveline Bussemaker in the sixth minute.

Things calmed down from there, as the game went without another goal until the third quarter, when Meij added another assist by feeding freshman Tavia Flecksteiner for the latter's fifth of the year, in the 32nd minute

Franklin Pierce got on the board just 1:59 later, in the 34th minute. Senior Meghan Winn (Newburyport, Mass.) -- also playing in her final collegiate game -- picked up one last assist, as she played a long ball ahead from the midfield. Hazley ran it down and got on the other end of it before finishing off her team-best seventh of the season on the breakaway.

Pace would stretch the lead as high as 7-1. Meij made it three assists on the day in the 37th minute, as she set up junior Kate Demars this time. Stevens capped her first collegiate hat trick in the 44th minute, while Dietz put home a goal in the 46th minute.

Jarowicz provided the game's final offense in the 50th minute, as she corralled a loose ball in the circle and buried her third of the season to create the 7-2 final.

Sophomore Addy Araneo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) logged the first three quarters in the Franklin Pierce cage, made four saves against 10 shots on goal and suffered the loss (4-8). Senior MacKenzie Potvin (Goffstown, N.H.) took over for the fourth quarter and stopped one of two shots.

Three Pace goalkeepers combined to stop four of six shots on the Setters' cage. Freshman Alina Buerger (11-7) made two saves on three shots over 43:12 of work to pick up the win.
