Bio

Marissa Butler enters her fourth season as the head coach of the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team in 2023.

As the fourth head coach in program history, Butler has compiled a 10-30 record (.250 winning percentage) over 40 games through three seasons in Rindge.

In 2022, Butler guided the Ravens to highest single-season win totals in three seasons, with all four victories out of a 4-14 overall mark coming in consecutive fashion for their longest win streak since 2015. Sophomore midfielder Rebecca Phillips was the lone Northeast-10 All-Conference honors recipient, receiving Third Team recognition for her efforts. Phillips also joined senior midfielder Christine Jarowicz as Academic All-Conference honorees from the Northeast-10.

The 2021 campaign marked Butler's first full season at the helm of the Ravens. Feline van Doorn capped her career with her second straight selection to the All-Northeast-10 Conference Third Team, after a 10-goal, 21-point campaign. Julia Roijakkers landed on the NE10 Academic All-Conference Team, while the Ravens had 11 players named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad.

Butler's debut season as a collegiate head coach was abbreviated, as the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 fall season and ultimately led to an abbreviated, four-game season played in spring of 2021. Still, the Ravens showed signs of promise for the years ahead, as a pair of newcomers and a returning sophomore led the team in scoring: freshman transfer Anna Beck (4-0-8), freshman Julia Rooijakkers (2-1-5), and sophomore Alicia Hottleman (2-1-5).

Rindge is the first collegiate head coaching stop for Butler, who joined the Ravens after a pair of assistant coaching stints. Most recently, she served as an assistant coach at fellow Northeast-10 Conference member Stonehill in 2019, when she helped guide the Skyhawks to an appearance in the NE10 Championship. Prior, Butler spent three seasons (2016-18) as a graduate assistant coach at the Division III level with Springfield College. The Pride made postseason appearances in each of her three seasons in "The City of Progress", including trips to the NEWMAC semifinals in 2017 and 2018. Butler has also collected coaching experience working various field hockey camps at the collegaite and high school levels across New England.

As an undergraduate, Butler (then Marissa Shaw) was a four-year letterwinner at the Division I level with the University of Maine (bio). Over her four seasons in Orono, she appeared in 76 games as a forward for the Black Bears, including 60 starts, and tallied 43 points, on 17 goals and nine assists. In the classroom, she earned National Academic Squad accolades from the NFHCA during both her freshman and senior campaigns. UMaine advanced to the postseason in each of her four years on campus, including a trip to the America East title game in her senior season in 2015.

Originally from Plymouth, Maine, Butler is a 2016 graduate of University of Maine, with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology and physical education. She earned her master's degree in athletic administration from Springfield College in 2018. Butler is a certified K-12 physical education and health teach in Massachusetts.
