Field Hockey Stumbles at Saint Anselm, 6-2

Silvery Clukey

MANCHESTER, N.H. (October 26, 2022) -- Junior Silver Clukey (Winslow, Maine) scored for the first time in more than a year, in the first quarter at Grappone Stadium on Wednesday night. It would not be enough for the visiting Franklin Pierce University field hockey team though, as Saint Anselm used three second-quarter goals to power to a 6-2 Northeast-10 Conference victory. Senior Maggie Malloy tallied her third hat trick of the season in the victory for the Hawks.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 4-9 (3-5 NE10), while Saint Anselm improves to 8-5 (7-2 NE10).

Things got off to a very quick start in the Queen City on Wednesday night, as the game was tied at 1-1 less than three minutes in. Saint Anselm opened the scoring just 83 seconds in, when junior Maddie Davis found the ball amid a scramble out front and pushed it off to the left for Malloy, who had an easy finish for her team-leading 10th goal of the season.

Franklin Pierce responded just 85 seconds later, in the third minute. Senior Meghan Winn (Newburyport, Mass.) started things with a long drive down the left wing, which sophomore Caity Hazley (Kingston, Mass.) chased down in the corner. Hazley carried along the end line and centered for Clukey, who tucked a shot inside the left post from near the penalty spot for her first of the campaign. It was Clukey's first goal since Oct. 6, 2021 at Assumption.

Saint Anselm took the lead for good before the first quarter was out, with a goal in the 14th minute. Graduate student Jackie Gaumer had a lengthy feed down the left side of the field to Malloy, who reversed her stick and slipped a shot home on the short side from five yards out for her second of the game.

The third quarter was all Hawks, as the home team ballooned the lead to 5-1, with a trio of goals. In the 19th minute, Davis put her third of the year inside the left post on a breakaway. In the 26th minute, sophomore Amanda Lewandowski buried a rebound from the middle of the circle for her sixth of the season. In the 27th minute, Davis struck for her second of the night on a corner play, with a long drive through traffic from the left side.

Saint Anselm pushed the lead as high as 6-1, with a third-quarter tally, in the 33rd minute. Sophomore Chloe Kapsambelis had the feed from just outside the top of the circle on the left side, and Malloy capped her hat trick from the middle of the circle. It was her second consecutive three-goal game, as well as her third of the season. Malloy is on a three-game goal-scoring streak (7-2-16).

Franklin Pierce got one back in the 40th minute, to create the 6-2 final. Sophomore Lexie Frank (Cape May Court House, N.J.) inserted the ball on a corner and sent it to sophomore Rebecca Phillips (West Amwell, N.J.) at the top of the circle. Phillips teed up a drive from there and notched her third goal of the season as the ball deflected off a defensive stick and into the upper-left corner of the net. For Frank, the assist was her first collegiate point.

Sophomore Addy Araneo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) started, made five saves against 10 shots and suffered the loss (4-5) in front of the Franklin Pierce net. Senior MacKenzie Potvin (Goffstown, N.H.) took over for the second half and made two stops against three shots the rest of the way. For Saint Anselm, junior Mackenzie McConnell (8-5) made two saves against three shots over the opening 36:10 to pick up the win. Sophomore Sidney Falterer stopped three of four shots over the remaining 23:50.

The Ravens are back home for their next two, beginning on Saturday, Oct. 29, against Mercy. The NE10 contest is set for 11 a.m. at Sodexo Field.
