Field Hockey Stumbles at Mercy, 3-2 (OT)

Julia Rooijakkers

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (October 16, 2021) -- A second-half rally allowed the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team to force overtime on Saturday, on the road at Mercy. Overtime itself, though, would not go the way of the Ravens at Mercy Field. Graduate student Nicole Cotton found the back of the cage 4:36 into the extra session, as the host Mavericks dealt Franklin Pierce a 3-2, Northeast-10 Conference loss.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-11 (1-9 NE10), while Mercy improves to 3-9 (2-7 NE10).

Mercy would build a 2-0 halftime lead with a goal apiece in the first and second quarters. In the 10th minute, freshman Kasey Volz sent a pass into the circle for sophomore Ally Schreck, who put her second of the season into the bottom-right corner of the cage. In the 17th minute, Volz picked up another helper, as she carried into the circle and set up the first goal of the campaign for junior Alyssa Sacco. Franklin Pierce held a 12-7 advantage in shots at halftime, but trailed by a pair.

The Ravens set out on the comeback trail less than three minutes into the second half. In the 33rd minute, sophomore Annie Corbett (Oakland, Maine) sent a corner to the top of the circle for sophomore Julia Rooijakkers (Eindhoven, Netherlands). Rooijakkers let fly from there and blasted a shot through the onrushing defense and into the back of the cage for her second of the year.

Franklin Pierce drew even with just 2:44 left in regulation, as senior Feline van Doorn (Barendrecht, Netherlands) notched her team-leading ninth goal of the season. This one came in the aftermath of a corner play. Amid a scramble in front of the Mercy net, Corbett got her stick to the ball, and deflected it off to the right towards van Doorn. The latter had a clear shot from there into the gaping cage to level the score.

Mercy would find the winner though, in the 65th minute, during another goalmouth scramble. Cotton was denied on her first attempt by freshman goalkeeper Addy Araneo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), but was able to finish off her own rebound from outside the right post for her fourth goal of the year.

Araneo (3-7) finished with nine saves against 12 shots on her goal and suffered the loss for Franklin Pierce. Senior Lauren Viscione (2-9) made 14 saves against 15 shots over 61:07 of work to tally the win for Mercy. Fellow senior Cydney Wolff came on for the final 3:31 of regulation on Mercy's Senior Day and made one save, but also allowed van Doorn's late equalizer.

The Ravens are back on the road on Wednesday, Oct. 20, when they travel to Bentley for an NE10 contest at 4 p.m. in Waltham, Mass.
