Three Find Net as Field Hockey Blanks AIC, 3-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 29, 2021) -- The Franklin Pierce University field hockey team punched its way back into the win column on the road on Wednesday night. The Ravens put home goals in the second, third and fourth quarters, each from a different goal-scorer, to chalk up a 3-0 win over American International, in non-conference play at Abdow Field. Senior Feline van Doorn (Barendrecht, Netherlands) notched the game-winner in the middle of the second quarter.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-7, while AIC falls to 5-4.

After a scoreless first, van Doorn provided the only goal Franklin Pierce would need, in the 24th minute. Sophomore Julia Rooijakkers (Eindhoven, Netherlands) played the ball into the circle and found her fellow countrywoman. Upon receipt of the pass, van Doorn wound to fire, but noticed an onrushing defender and thought quickly. She short-circuited her own shot attempt, let the ball drift between the defender's feet and then collected it on the other side, which left her with only the keeper to beat. Beat the keeper she would, as van Doorn knocked her team-leading fifth goal of the season to the back of the cage.

The Ravens made it 2-0 on the other side of halftime, in the 39th minute. Junior Meghan Winn (Newburyport, Mass.) send the ball straight up middle of the AIC defense and into the circle, where she found fellow junior Christine Jarowicz (Kennebunk, Maine). Jarowicz turned and shoved a shot home for her third goal of the season, and second in as many games.

A fourth-quarter insurance marker, off a corner in the 51st minute, created the 3-0 final. The Ravens ran a play for Rooijakkers on the left side, but the sophomore partially fanned on her shot attempt from there. Instead, she wound up carrying into the circle and then pushed the ball towards the goal. Fellow sophomore Annie Corbett (Oakland, Maine), who had taken the corner, was on the scene at the left post and finished things off after the ball came off the defense, for her first collegiate goal.

Freshman Addy Araneo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) stopped all eight shots on her cage to pick up the win (2-3) and notch her first career shutout. Sophomore Taylor Wildes (0-1) piled up 11 saves on 14 shots at the other end of the field, but took the loss.

The Ravens are back to Northeast-10 Conference play when they return home on Sunday, Oct. 3, to host Molloy at 11 a.m. at Sodexo Field.
