RINDGE, N.H. (September 17, 2021) -- A team in need of a win, the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team got things headed in the right direction early on Friday afternoon at Sodexo Field. The Ravens piled up three first-quarter goals, added another before halftime and cruised to a 5-1 win over visiting Mercyhurst in non-conference play. Sophomore Anna Beck (Attleboro, Mass.) and senior Feline van Doorn (Barendrecht, Netherlands) scored twice each to lead the way for the Ravens.

With the win, Franklin Pierce gets into the left-hand column for the first time in 2021 and improves to 1-4, while Mercyhurst falls to 0-5. The Lakers have now lost nine straight dating back to their spring season.

The Ravens needed only 6:15 to find the net on Friday, and once they did, they were able to pot three in a span of just 7:09. In the seventh minute, sophomore Julia Rooijakkers (Eindhoven, Netherlands) drove the ball towards the goal from the top of the circle. Junior Christine Jarowicz (Kennebunk, Maine) was able to redirect it in front of the keeper, which sent the ball straight to Beck at the left post for the easy finish on her third goal of the season.

In the 12th minute, van Doorn got on the board with her second of the year, as freshman Caity Hazley (Kingston, Mass.) led a 2-on-1 into the circle on the right side and slipped a pass over to her wide-open teammate. Just 2:03 after the van Doorn goal, in the 14th minute, junior Meghan Winn (Newburyport, Mass.) banged home a rebound right out front for her first of the campaign to make it a 3-0 Franklin Pierce lead.

Mercyhurst temporarily stemmed the tide in the second quarter, in the 20th minute. Junior Sarah Vosburgh ran down a through ball from junior Katie Goodenow on a 3-on-3 rush into the circle. Now behind the last defenders, Vosburgh reversed her stick near the left post and knocked a pass back out front. On the scene was sophomore Jenna Cavalieri, who brushed her third of the year to the back of the cage.

Franklin Pierce answered just 2:14 before halftime, in the 28th minute. Beck sent the ball to the top of the circle on a corner, and then set up outside the left post. Rooijakkers took the feed and sent it back to Beck on the give-and-go. Beck was able to get just enough on the shot to muscle it through some traffic to complete her second career multiple-goal game.

The Ravens capped the scoring in the third quarter, in the 38th minute. With the ball and space to work with on the left side of the circle, van Doorn stickhandled around the last defender, carried towards the goal and put her shot home on the short side to tally her third career multi-goal game.

Freshman goalkeeper Addy Araneo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) made her collegiate debut in the Franklin Pierce cage and stopped eight of nine shots to pick up the win (1-0). Senior Libby Jones (0-2) took the loss at the other end, after surrendering three goals on 12 shots in the first quarter. Freshman Kayla Desormeau went the rest of the way for the Lakers and stopped five of seven shots.

The Ravens are right back at it on Sodexo Field on Sunday, Sept. 19, when they host New Haven in a Northeast-10 Conference contest at 2 p.m.
