Pair from van Doorn no Help, Field Hockey Felled at SCSU, 3-2

Feline van Doorn

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (September 12, 2021) -- Senior Feline van Doorn (Barendrecht, Netherlands) bookended the scoring on the road on Sunday afternoon for the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team, for her third career multiple-goal game. Unfortunately for the Ravens, the scores sandwiched a trio of tallies by Southern Connecticut State, as the host Owls dealt Franklin Pierce a 3-2 defeat in Northeast-10 Conference play at Jess Dow Field. Junior Kaitlyn Bourque netted the game-winner for SCSU late in the third quarter.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 0-3 (0-2 NE10), while SCSU improves to 1-2 (1-0 NE10). The game had originally been scheduled for Friday night, but was postponed for two days due to a power outage on SCSU's campus.

The only goal of the first quarter came off the stick of van Doorn in the seventh minute. The unassisted tally was the 10th goal of her career and got the Ravens off on the right foot.

SCSU responded with a pair in the second quarter to take the lead for good. Sophomore Kiley Jackson leveled the score in the 20th minute, with an unassisted tally of her own, her first of the season. In the 28th minute, with just 2:52 to play in the half, freshman Josephine Nolet put away her first collegiate goal, off an assist from senior Alyssa Haskins to make it a 2-1 SCSU lead.

The Owls picked up an insurance marker with just 12 seconds remaining in the third quarter, in the 45th minute, to give themselves some breathing room. Bourque notched an unassisted tally for her first goal of the campaign.

The Ravens were firing on all cylinders on the comeback trail in the fourth quarter, as they were able to uncork 13 shot attempts, including nine on goal. Despite the barrage, Franklin Pierce struck once in the frame, 64 seconds to play, as van Doorn put away her second unassisted tally of the game, but it would prove to be too little, too late for the Ravens. SCSU junior keeper Janelle Ward made seven saves in the final stanza, and the Owls got a key defensive save in the period as well, from junior Grace Conselyea.

It was the third multiple-goal game of van Doorn's career, and the Dutchwoman has now had one such game in each of her three full seasons in a Ravens uniform. Her previous two-goal games came Oct. 12, 2019, against Mercy, and Oct. 5, 2018, against New Haven.

Junior netminder MacKenzie Potvin (Goffstown, N.H.) finished with three saves against six shots and suffered the loss (0-3) in front of the Franklin Pierce net. Ward (1-2) piled up 14 saves against 16 shots to pick up the win in front of the SCSU goal.

The Ravens are back on the road on Tuesday, Sept. 14, when they make the trek to Burlington, Vt., to take on Saint Michael's in an NE10 matchup. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at Doc Jacobs Field.
