Canavan Scores Pair as Field Hockey Snaps Losing Streak with 4-0 Win at Molloy

SEAFORD, N.Y. (October 1, 2016) – Junior forward Carly Canavan (Kingston, N.Y.) scored twice on Sunday afternoon to lead the way for the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team, which snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 4-0, non-conference victory over Molloy at Cedar Creek Park. Along the way, sophomore midfielder Sarah Bjorn (Holden, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal and sophomore forward Ashley Silva (Laconia, N.H.) picked up her first career point with an assist.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 3-7, while first-year program Molloy falls to 1-6. Franklin Pierce dominated play throughout the afternoon, chalking up advantages of 32-3 in shot attempts, 20-3 in shots on goal and 16-2 in penalty corners.

Franklin Pierce would score twice in each half on Sunday at Molloy. Bjorn opened the scoring in the 15th minute, with her first career goal, as she beat Molloy graduate student goalkeeper Arianna Ovadia from directly in front of the cage. Canavan followed with her fourth goal of the season in the 28th minute. Silva would pick up her first collegiate point with an assist on the play, as she took the original shot, while Canavan banged home the rebound.

Canavan would score on the other side of halftime as well, as she struck again in the 37th minute, to complete her eighth career multiple-goal game. This time, the goal was unassisted, as she beat Ovadia to the left side of the net for her fifth goal of the campaign. Junior forward Danielle Harris (Templeton, Mass.) rounded out the scoring in the 68th minute, with her second of the season, as she put home a rebound to create the 4-0 final. Junior back Lauren Grimard (Turners Falls, Mass.) picked up her second assist in as many days on the Harris goal.

Junior goalkeeper Meaghan Williams (Salem, N.H.) made two saves against three shots on goal on the way to the win (3-7) and her seventh career shutout, while junior back Erin Smith (Templeton, Mass.) added a defensive save along the way. The win was the 20th career victory for Williams, who now sits five wins and two shutouts behind the program records in each category, both of which are held by Brittany Nyzio '12.

At the other end of the field, Ovadia (1-6) played the first 62:45 in net for Molloy and piled up 13 saves against 16 shots on goal. Freshman netminder Amanda Mesas logged the final 7:15 and made one save against two shots on goal. Junior midfielder Christina Carbone picked up a defensive save along the way for the Lions.

The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, Oct. 5, when they travel to Stonehill for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at W.B. Mason Stadium in Easton, Mass.
