Kelly Caps Field Hockey’s Season with OT Winner in 2-1 Triumph Over LIU Post

Junior scores twice

RINDGE, N.H. (October 30, 2015) – It looked like heartbreak could be story of Senior Day at Sodexo Field on Friday afternoon, as the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team surrendered the tying goal with just 2:37 left to play in regulation against LIU Post. However, in the 84th minute, with just 1:20 to play in the first overtime, junior midfielder Kenady Kelly (Plymouth, N.H.) made sure the team's six seniors left on a happy note, as her second goal of the day went as the game-winner in a 2-1 victory in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to finish its season at 10-8 (5-7 Northeast-10), while LIU Post finishes at 10-8 (6-6 Northeast-10).

The entirety of the first half went without a goal, as well as without many significant threats from either side. In fact, neither team would score until the 57th minute, when Kelly picked up her first goal of the game. As the Ravens worked the ball towards the net, LIU Post junior goalkeeper Ericka Parks padded aside the initial attempt on goal. On the rebound, sophomore forward Carly Canavan (Kingston, N.Y.) quickly tapped a pass to the left post for Kelly, who was left with an easy finish into the empty cage for her second goal of the season.

Franklin Pierce held the lead for over 10 minutes, into the game's final three minutes, but LIU Post struck for the equalizer on a 68th-minute corner. After the ball came to the top of the circle, sophomore forward Kaycee Zelkovsky sent it to the right side for freshman forward Emily Miller. Miller took a shot from there which slipped past Franklin Pierce sophomore goalkeeper Meaghan Williams (Salem, N.H.) and inside the left post for Miller's fifth goal of the campaign.

Neither team would break the tie in the final 2:37 of regulation, but Franklin Pierce found the game-winning goal 13:40 into overtime. Miller had come off her line to challenge an attempt on goal, but was unable to clear the ball from the area in front of the goal. It all led to a scramble for the ball, approximately six yards from goal. Kelly was to the left-wing side of Miller and was able to corral the ball for herself before shuttling it into the empty cage to send the Ravens away winners.

Williams (9-7) made five saves against six shots on goal in net in the win for Franklin Pierce. At the other end of the field, Parks (7-7) made three saves against five shots on goal in the losing effort for LIU Post.
