Burnell Burnell notched her second goal of the season on Saturday at AIC.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 25, 2014) – American International senior forward Jenna Masionis notched her second goal of the game just 25 seconds into overtime on Saturday afternoon to send the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team away with a 3-2 loss in Northeast-10 Conference play at Abdow Field. Junior midfielders Chelsey Burnell (Porter, Maine) and Erin Trainor (Auburn, Mass.) scored in defeat for Franklin Pierce.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 5-7 (2-3 Northeast-10), while American International improves to 6-6 (2-3 Northeast-10). It marked the third overtime game in the last six meetings between the two teams, though it was the first since 2011.

Goals came early and often in the first half, as AIC would eventually take a 2-1 lead into the intermission. Masionis opened the scoring in the 10th minute, when she put away her eighth goal of the season off an assist from freshman forward Liv Magni.

The Yellow Jackets would extend the lead to 2-0 in the 18th minute, on the third goal of the campaign by junior midfielder Erica McLean. This time, Masionis provided the assist, as she sent a pass to the left post, where McLean finished it off from point-blank range.

Franklin Pierce got on the board less than four minutes after the McLean goal to cut the lead in half before halftime. Burnell's shot came from the left side on a corner play, while sophomore midfielder Kenady Kelly (Plymouth, N.H.) provided the assist. For Burnell, it was her second goal of the year.

The scoring dried up in the second half, as Trainor struck for her first of the season just 108 seconds in, which wound up as the final goal of regulation. Again the goal came off of a penalty corner, as sophomore midfielder Andrea Fahey (Hudson, Mass.) dished the ball to the right side, where Trainor drove it home from the edge of the circle.

After the final 33:12 of regulation went without another goal, Masionis wasted no time winning things for AIC in overtime. Just 25 seconds in, junior midfielder Kaylin Harbin sent a pass into the middle from the right side and Masionis put it away in front of the cage to send everybody home. For Masionis, the goal gave her 84 career points, which set a new school record for AIC, as she surpassed Amanda McLean, Erica's older sister, who graduated in 2012.

AIC piled up a 21-13 advantage in shot attempts, though it did not lead to a disparity in scoring chances, as the Yellow Jackets had just an 11-9 edge in shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Meaghan Williams (Salem, N.H.) made seven saves and suffered the loss (5-7) for Franklin Pierce, while sophomore midfielder Shannon O'Leary (Florence, Mass.) added a defensive save. At the other end of the field, junior Ainslee Penfield finished with seven saves as well to pick up the win (6-6) in front of the cage for AIC.

The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, Oct. 29, when they return home to host Bentley in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
