Bachelder records defensive save

Bachelder Bachelder made her second defensive save of the season on Wednesday afternoon at Saint Michael's.

COLCHESTER, Vt. (October 9, 2013) – Junior forward Cassaundra Davis scored twice on Wednesday afternoon to lead Saint Michael's to a 4-0 win over the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team in Northeast-10 Conference play at Duffy Field. The Franklin Pierce offense was unable to make any inroads on the afternoon, as the Ravens were outshot 17-5 and were held to just one shot on goal.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-9 (0-4 Northeast-10), while Saint Michael's improves to 4-7 (2-2 Northeast-10). Saint Michael's completed a two-game season sweep of Franklin Pierce, as the Purple Knights previously posted a 6-4 victory in Rindge on Sept. 19. It was the ninth consecutive loss for Franklin Pierce.

Davis got the only goal Saint Michael's would need in the 11th minute off of a penalty corner play. Sophomore midfielder Morgan Mazanec injected the ball to junior midfielder Hannah Beardsley at the top of the circle, and the latter stopped it for Davis, who drove home her team-leading seventh goal of the season from there. The Purple Knights made it 2-0 just 64 seconds before the halftime break, when senior midfielder Courtney Bedell stuffed home a rebound for her first goal of the campaign.

Another rebound goal in the 51st minute made it 3-0, as Mazanec finished off her three-point day with her second goal of the season. Just 2:27 later, Davis capped the scoring with her second of the day off an assist from senior forward Kelly Celata.

Freshman goalkeeper Amy Zahensky (Bow, N.H.) started in net for Franklin Pierce, made six saves against 10 shots on goal, took the loss (1-9) and was ultimately pulled after the fourth Saint Michael's goal. Sophomore Colette Donnelly (Woodbury, Conn.) stopped the only shot she faced over the remaining 16:42. Sophomore back Natalia Bachelder (South Berwick, Maine) made her second defensive save of the season late in the second half.

Junior Jackie Chisholm turned aside the only shot on goal Franklin Pierce recorded on the afternoon to pick up the win (2-4) and post her second career shutout in front of the Saint Michael's cage.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 12, when they return home to host American International in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
