Field Hockey Falls at Adelphi, 3-0

Nyzio stops 11 shots

Nyzio Nyzio made 11 saves on Tuesday afternoon at Adelphi.

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (September 27, 2011) – Senior goalkeeper Brittany Nyzio (Attleboro, Mass.) made 11 saves on Tuesday afternoon, but the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team was defeated, 3-0, by Adelphi in Northeast-10 Conference play at Motamed Field. Junior forward Cassie Cabral picked up three points on a goal and an assist for Adelphi in the win.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-6 (1-1 Northeast-10), while Adelphi improves to 5-6 (2-1 Northeast-10).

The game went scoreless through its first 28 minutes before Adelphi opened the scoring with 6:27 to play before halftime. Senior forward Julianne Gerbino took a pass 10 yards in front of the cage and rifled home her fourth goal of the season, while Cabral picked up the assist on the goal that would prove to be the game-winner.

The Panthers would double their lead to 2-0 with a strike 7:56 after the halftime intermission. This time, senior forward Jeanette Heimerle sent the ball towards the cage and senior back Crystal Gray deflected it to the back of the net to score her third goal of the season on the redirection.

Adelphi would pick up some insurance and put the game on ice when Cabral found the net with just 46 seconds to play to create the 3-0 final. She corralled a loose ball in the goalmouth and put it inside the left post for her fifth goal of the season.

Nyzio made 11 saves against 14 shots on her cage, but ultimately took the loss (2-4) in front of the net for Franklin Pierce. Senior goalkeeper Lucia Vigliotti turned aside all three shots sent her way to post her second shutout of the season and pick up the win (5-6) between the pipes for Adelphi. Junior back Alyssa Juszczyk (Warren, Mass.) recorded her team-leading third defensive save of the season for Franklin Pierce early in the first half.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 1, when they return home to host Bentley in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
