Seven Ravens were honored for their work in the classroom by the
NFHCA, as was the team as a whole.RINDGE, N.H. (May 25, 2012) – Senior forwards Danielle Dolan '12 (West Brookfield, Mass.), Tia Levins '12 (Manchester, Maine) and Lauren L'Heureux '12 (Sanford, Maine); senior back Beth Haight '12 (Hamlin, N.Y.); sophomore midfielders Julie Hemphill (Clarkston, Mich.) and Jess Rogers (Uxbridge, Mass.); and senior goalkeeper Brittany Nyzio '12 (Attleboro, Mass.) of the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team have all been named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division II National Academic Squad, as announced this spring by the NFHCA. To be eligible for selection, a student-athlete must have posted a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or higher through the fall semester.
In addition, Franklin Pierce was one of 20 teams selected as recipients of the NFHCA Division II National Academic Team Award. To receive the award, teams were required to post a 3.0 grade-point average or higher in the fall semester.
Four of Franklin Pierce's senior selections earn National Academic Squad recognition for the fourth time in as many years, pushing the program's total to 11 four-time honorees. Of those 11 four-time selections, nine played under sixth-year Head Coach Meighan Guiney for at least one season, while five played exclusively for Guiney during their time in Rindge.
Dolan had a 3.50 grade-point average through the fall semester and recently graduated with a degree in psychology. She started all 19 games for the Ravens in the fall, finished tied for 21st in the nation in assists per game (0.37) and tied for eighth in the Northeast-10 in assists (7). Dolan finished her career as the school's all-time leader in assists (14) and is ranked fourth all-time in points (50) and fifth in goals. She was twice named to the Northeast-10 Weekly Honor Roll this fall and is one of the four Ravens to earn four career selections to the National Academic Squad.
Haight, an accounting and finance major, held a 3.34 grade-point average at the end of the fall semester and recently graduated as well. She started all 19 games as the captain of the backline and led a defense that placed third in the Northeast-10 in fewest shots on goal allowed per game (7.84). She earned All-Northeast-10 Second Team honors for her work and was selected to the NFHCA North/South Senior Game. She was a three-time Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Week selection as a senior, and also earned one Weekly Honor Roll selection as well. Haight finishes third in school history in defensive saves (6) and earns her first National Academic Squad selection.
Hemphill held a 3.36 grade-point average through three semesters at Franklin Pierce as a graphic design major. She appeared in all 19 games as a reserve for the Ravens after being sidelined for much of her freshman campaign. Hemphill earns National Academic Squad accolades for the second time in as many seasons.
L'Heureux had a 3.57 grade-point average through the fall and recently graduated with a degree in biology. She played in all 19 games for the Ravens as a senior and tied for second on the team in goals (5). She had her first career multiple-goal game with a two-goal outing against Assumption on Sept. 8 and, for the effort, earned a spot on the Northeast-10 Weekly Honor Roll for the week ending on Sept. 11. L'Heureux finishes as a four-time National Academic Squad honoree.
Levins leads the way for the Ravens, as she held a 3.85 grade-point average through the fall and just graduated with a degree in business management. She made 18 starts this fall and appeared in all 19 games on her way to All-Northeast-10 First Team, NFHCA North/South Senior Game, Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference and Northeast-10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award honors. She finished tied for ninth in the nation in goals per game (0.89) and ranked 14th in points per game (1.89). Meanwhile, she ranked third in the Northeast-10 in goals (17) and sixth in points (36), while tying for the league lead in game-winning goals (6). She finished her career as the school's all-time leader in goals (34) and point (73), while also setting school single-season records for goals (17) and points (36) during her senior season. Levins joins Dolan and L'Heureux as four-time selections to the National Academic Squad.
Nyzio held a 3.59 grade-point average through the fall and graduated with a degree in political science at the end of three years in Rindge after spending her freshman year at La Salle. She started 16 of 19 games in front of the Ravens net and appeared in one more game as a reserve to post a 9-7 record. Nyzio finished 11th in the nation in goals-against average (2.00) and save percentage (.739), while also placing fourth in the Northeast-10 in wins (9) and fifth in save percentage on her way to a Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference selection. Though she played only three seasons as a Raven, she leaves as the program's all-time leader in wins (25), goals-against average (1.65) and shutouts (9), and is the only goalkeeper in school history to tally 20 career wins. In addition, she owns the school single-season record for shutouts (6 in 2010) and tied the high-water mark for wins in a season (9 in 2011). Nyzio picks up her fourth National Academic Squad selection as well, as she was named to the Division I squad as a freshman at La Salle in addition to her three selections at Franklin Pierce.
Rogers owns a 3.35 grade-point average through four semesters at Franklin Pierce as an elementary education major. She appeared in 17 games for the Ravens as a sophomore and tallied her first career goal at Merrimack on Oct. 6. For Rogers, it is her second selection to the National Academic Squad in as many years.
The Ravens finished the 2011 season 10-9 (7-3 Northeast-10) and in third place in the Northeast-10, the highest finish in program annals. It was the second time the team finished above .500 overall, joining an 11-7 campaign in 2000. By winning percentage, the 7-3 (.700) Northeast-10 record trailed only 2000's record of 7-2 (.778).
