Jaksina scores first-half goal for Ravens

Jaksina Jaksina scored the Ravens' only goal on Saturday evening at American International.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 16, 2010) – Junior midfielder Jessica Hall converted a pass from sophomore forward Lisa Duckles with 2:55 to play in overtime on Saturday evening to give American International a 2-1 win over the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team in Northeast-10 Conference play at Ronald J. Abdow Field. Junior midfielder Kim Jaksina (Townsend, Mass.) scored the only goal of the game for Franklin Pierce.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 6-6 (3-1 Northeast-10), while American International improves to 7-5 (4-2 Northeast-10).

Franklin Pierce got on the board early in the first half. Just over 11 minutes into the contest, Jaksina scored an unassisted goal, her sixth of the season and fifth in four games.

The Ravens would hold the lead throughout a majority of the contest, before American International knotted the game at 1-1 with a goal with 13:18 to play in regulation. It was senior forward Rhonwen Peters who scored her fourth of the season without an assist. The goal snapped a stretch of 281:03 without a goal against for the Ravens.

Neither team would score again in regulation, as Franklin Pierce went to overtime for the first time in the 2010 season. Hall knocked home her first goal of the season 12:05 into the extra session to give AIC the victory.

Both teams were active on the offensive end throughout the game, as the Ravens held a 21-20 edge in shots, including a 14-13 edge in shots on goal. The Yellow Jackets were awarded 15 penalty corners, while Franklin Pierce picked up 13.

Junior goalkeeper Brittany Nyzio (Attleboro, Mass.) made 11 saves against 13 shots on her cage, but ultimately took the loss (5-6) between the pipes for Franklin Pierce. The goal by Peters in the second half stopped Nyzio's personal stretch without allowing a goal at 246:03, a span which included two consecutive shutouts.

Junior Kim Steiner made 13 saves on 14 shots against to pick up the win (7-5) in front of the cage for American International.

The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, Oct. 19, when they travel to Stonehill for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at W.B. Mason Stadium in Easton, Mass.
