GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (October 10, 2009) – Sophomore forward Julianne Gerbino scored the only goal of the game 10:30 into overtime on Saturday afternoon to give Adelphi a 1-0 victory over the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team in Northeast-10 Conference play at Competition Field. Sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Nyzio (Attleboro, Mass.) made five saves for Franklin Pierce in defeat.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 7-7 (3-3 Northeast-10), while Adelphi improves to 8-5 (3-1 Northeast-10) with the victory.

Gerbino scored the game-winning goal with 4:30 remaining in the first overtime period. After Nyzio made the initial save, Gerbino collected her own rebound and stuffed it into the cage for her team-leading 12th goal of the season.

Prior to overtime, the entirety of regulation would go by without a goal and both offenses really struggled to find their way early on. Adelphi held a 5-2 advantage in shots and a 3-0 edge in penalty corners in the first half, though the two sides only combined for three shots on goal.

Franklin Pierce ramped up the pressure in the second half, in which they held a 7-2 advantage in shots, including five shots on goal to just two for Adelphi. The teams combined for 15 penalty corners in the second half, with Franklin Pierce holding a 9-6 edge.

Chances came early and often in the 7-on-7 overtime frame, as the teams combined for nine shots (six on goal) and three penalty corners in a span of just over 10 minutes up until the game-winning goal.

Nyzio made five saves against six shots on her cage, but took the loss (6-6) in net for Franklin Pierce. Sophomore goalkeeper Lucia Vigliotti stopped all 10 shots on her net to pick up the win (8-3) and her fifth shutout of the season between the pipes for Adelphi.

The Ravens return to the field on Thursday, Oct. 15, when they travel to Southern Connecticut State for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Jess Dow Field in New Haven, Conn.
