RINDGE, N.H. (September 30,
2009) – Sophomore forward Lauren
L’Heureux (Sanford, Maine) netted the first goal of
her career and the only goal of the game on Wednesday afternoon to
lead the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team to a 1-0
victory over Assumption in Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo
Field. Sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Nyzio (Attleboro,
Mass.) stopped the only shot on her cage for Franklin
Pierce to earn her first career shutout.
With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 5-6 (2-2 Northeast-10),
while Assumption falls to 3-8 (1-4 Northeast-10) with the loss
Neither team found much in the way of bona fide scoring chances in
a scoreless first half which featured only three shots on goal
between the two teams. Franklin Pierce had the two better scoring
opportunities of the half, but was unable to cash in on either.
Near the midpoint of the half, sophomore forward Danielle
Dolan (West Brookfield, Mass.) found the ball on her stick
with only the keeper in front of her on the left side of the
circle. However, Assumption junior goalkeeper Danielle Luongo cut
down the angle well and smothered the shot.
Later, with just over two minutes to play in the opening stanza,
junior forward Ashley Moirano (Vero Beach, Fla.)
sent a pass ahead from midfield which split the Assumption defense
and sprung senior forward Katie Debler (Walpole,
Mass.) on a breakaway. Dolan went to the right side of the
circle and drew Luongo with her. Debler’s shot beat the
keeper on the near side, but bounced away off the right side of the
cage as the game remained scoreless heading into halftime.
Franklin Pierce held a 9-7 edge in shots in the first half,
including a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal. Assumption was awarded
five penalty corners in the first half to two for the Ravens.
The Ravens broke the ice just over eight minutes into the second
half. Sophomore midfielder Kimberly Jaksina (Townsend,
Mass.) took a free hit from the middle of the field and
sent it into the circle. L’Heureux stopped it there, turned
and fired a shot which beat the keeper on the right side to tally
the first goal of her career.
Franklin Pierce dominated large stretches of play in the second
half and came away with an 11-3 advantage in shots, including seven
shots on goal, in the period to give the Ravens a 20-10 edge over
the course of the game. Assumption was awarded four penalty corners
to three for Franklin Pierce in the second half to collect a 9-5
advantage for the game.
Nyzio stopped the only shot on her cage to earn the win (4-5) for
Franklin Pierce and posted her first career shutout in the process.
Luongo made eight saves against nine shots, but took the loss (3-8)
between the pipes for Assumption.
The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 3, when they
travel to American International for a non-conference contest. Game
time is set for 6:30 p.m. at John Homer Miller Field in
Springfield, Mass. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Oct. 7
against Stonehill at 6 p.m.
