Nyzio makes eight saves for Ravens

RINDGE, N.H. (September 12, 2009) – Sophomore forward Julianne Gerbino scored the long goal of the game with 11:20 to play in regulation on Saturday afternoon to lead Adelphi to a 1-0 victory over the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team in non-conference play at Sodexo Field. Sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Nyzio (Attleboro, Mass.) made eight saves in defeat for Franklin Pierce.

With the win, Adelphi improves to 3-2 (0-0 Northeast-10), while Franklin Pierce falls to 1-4 (0-0 Northeast-10) with the loss.

The first half was rather evenly played, but went by the boards without a goal. Adelphi held a 7-6 edge in shots in the opening stanza and attempted four corners to two for Franklin Pierce. Nyzio made three of her eight saves in the first half, while Adelphi sophomore goalkeeper Lucia Vigliotti turned aside four shots.

Adelphi would tally the only goal of the game with 11:20 remaining in regulation. Sophomore forward Jeanette Heimerle slipped a pass into the left side of the circle to Gerbino. Gerbino took the pass in stride and pushed a shot past Nyzio to tally her team-leading eighth goal of the season, which ties her for the lead among all Northeast-10 Conference players as well.

Franklin Pierce generated its share of offense in the second half, but could not fine the cage. The Ravens attempted 11 shots to six for Adelphi to take away a 17-13 edge over the course of the game. Franklin Pierce was awarded six second-half penalty corners to hold an 8-7 advantage in the game.

Vigliotti stopped all nine shots she faced in front of the Adelphi cage to earn the win (3-1) and post her first career shutout. Nyzio was beaten just once on nine shots on her net, but took the loss (0-3) between the pipes for Franklin Pierce.

The Ravens return to the field on Sunday, Sept. 13, when they travel to C.W. Post for a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Hickox Field in Brookville, N.Y. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Sept. 19 against American International at 1 p.m.
