Ashley Moirano Ashley Moirano scored the game-winning goal with 1:49 to play on Friday at Assumption.

WORCESTER, Mass. (October 10, 2008) – Sophomore midfielder Ashley Moirano (Vero Beach, Fla./South Burlington (Vt.)) scored the game-winning goal with just 1:49 remaining in regulation on Friday night to propel the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team to a 2-1 road victory over Assumption in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Assumption opened the scoring less than 10 minutes into the game. Senior forward Maura Strickland (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) took a pass on the left side from junior forward Hilary Zysk (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and found the back of the cage to give Assumption a 1-0 lead at the 8:07 mark. Franklin Pierce would even the score with just over 10 minutes remaining in the opening frame. At the 24:10 mark, freshman forward Danielle Dolan (West Brookfield, Mass./Quaboag Regional) scored her fifth goal of the season as she tipped a pass from junior forward Ashley Abernethy (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) into an empty net to tie the game, 1-1.

Franklin Pierce dominated the opening 35 minutes to the tune of a 9-2 shots advantage.

Nearly the entirety of the second half would go scoreless before Moirano broke the tie with 1:49 remaining. Moirano was able to snag a loose ball from a scramble in front of the cage and score her second goal of the season to give Franklin Pierce a lead it would not relinquish.

Franklin Pierce finished the game with an 11-3 shots advantage and enjoyed a 7-3 edge in penalty corners.

Freshman goalkeeper Kristin Tormollan (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) made one save in front of the Franklin Pierce cage to earn the victory. Senior Jacque Dulong (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) made six saves for Assumption in defeat.

The Ravens (6-8, 6-7 NE-10) return to the field on Tuesday, Oct. 14, when they return home to face Bentley in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge, N.H. Assumption (2-13, 1-12 NE-10) returns to action on Oct. 14 at Southern Connecticut State.
