RINDGE, N.H. (September 28, 2008)
– Sophomore forward Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury)
scored two goals, including the game-winner, on Sunday afternoon to
lead No. 4 nationally ranked Massachusetts Lowell to a 6-4 victory
over the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team in
Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field. Junior forward Katie Debler (Walpole,
Mass./Walpole) notched two assists for Franklin Pierce as
four different Ravens scored goals.
Massachusetts Lowell struck for the first goal of the game just
under 10 minutes into the first half. At the 9:46 mark, junior
forward Jaci Moulton (Baldwinville, Mass./Narragansett) was at the
left post and tipped in a shot from the right side by senior
midfielder Michelle Harrington (Rockport, Mass./Rockport) to open
the scoring with her 10th goal of the season. Later, Harrington
made it 2-0 with her first goal of the year at the 21:19 mark when
she took a feed from senior midfielder Missy Seeley (East
Hampstead, N.H./Nashua North) and scored from the right side. The
River Hawks extended the lead to 3-0 with 4:26 to play in the
opening half when Macy unleashed a rocket from the right side to
notch her conference-best 12th goal of the campaign, with the
assist going to junior defender Laura Sullivan (Norwood,
Mass./Norwood).
Franklin Pierce cut the lead to 3-1 just 1:25 later when junior
forward Debler slipped a pass behind the defense to sophomore
midfielder Jordan Baillargeon
(Westfield, Mass./Westfield) who found the back of the cage
for her first goal of the season. However, Massachusetts Lowell
would regain the three-goal advantage with 1:48 to play in the
first half as sophomore forward Liz Day (North Andover, Mass./North
Andover) poked the ball into the net from amidst a scramble out
front off an assist from Moulton.
Massachusetts Lowell controlled play to the tune of a 14-3 shots
advantage in the opening stanza.
Franklin Pierce would outscore the River Hawks 3-2 in the second
half to create the 6-4 final. Senior defender Kayleigh Jaksina (Townsend, Mass./North
Middlesex) struck first with 21:08 remaining in regulation
with her first goal of the season as she deflected in a shot from
the right side by senior defender Stephanie Howard (Norwalk,
Conn./Norwalk). Just 1:03 later, the Ravens closed to within
a goal at 4-3 when freshman forward Danielle Dolan (West Brookfield, Mass./Quaboag
Regional) scored her second goal of the season from the
right side off a pass from sophomore midfielder Ashley Moirano (Vero beach, Fla./South
Burlington). Massachusetts Lowell regained a two-goal lead
with less than 20 minutes to play when Macy knocked home her second
goal of the game off a centering pass from Harrington.
The Ravens once again closed to within a goal at 5-4 with 5:27 to
play in regulation. Debler passed the ball from the top of the
circle into the middle where it found Moirano who turned and fired
to score her first goal of the season. However, sophomore forward
Katie Enaire (Amesbury, Mass./Amesbury) would score an unassisted
goal, her eighth of the season, for the River Hawks with 1:19
remaining to effectively put the game away.
The River Hawks held an 11-5 edge in shots in the second half and
a 25-8 advantage over the full 70 minutes.
Sophomore goalkeeper Amy Carbon (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham)
made one save in net for the River Hawks over the first 48:52 to
earn the victory. Senior Danielle Dodier (Kensington, N.H.) played
the final 21:08 in front of the cage and made one save. Freshman
goalkeeper Kristin Tormollan
(Waterville, Maine/Waterville) made eight saves on the
afternoon for the Ravens.
