RINDGE, N.H. (Sept. 13, 2008) – Junior forward Sarah Ranieri (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) scored the only goal of the game 2:16 into the second overtime on Saturday afternoon to lead Assumption to a 1-0 victory over the Franklin Pierce University field hockey team in Northeast-10 action at Sodexo Field. Freshman goalkeeper Kristin Tormollan (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) made eight saves for Franklin Pierce in defeat.

The first half went scoreless but featured plenty of back-and-forth action. Franklin Pierce held an 8-7 shots advantage heading into the halftime break. Perhaps the best chance of the first stanza for the Ravens came off a corner near the end of the half. Senior defender Stephanie Howard (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) took a pass off a corner and had room to wind and fire a shot from the left side of the circle. Assumption senior goalkeeper Jacque Dulong (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) was able to kick the ball away to preserve the scoreless tie.

The second half would go without a goal as well, as Assumption held a 6-5 shots advantage to even things at 13-13 for the game. Franklin Pierce had the better of play in the first overtime, as it recorded all four shots of the frame, but could not find the game-winner.

Ranieri finally broke through for Assumption with the game-winner just over two minutes into the second overtime period. Franklin Pierce turned the ball over inside the circle which allowed Assumption junior forward Hillary Zysk (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) to feed Ranieri on the right side for the game’s only goal

Dulong made six saves in front of the Assumption cage to tally the victory. Tormollan made eight saves for Franklin Pierce and took the loss.

The Ravens (2-3, 2-2 NE-10) return to the field on Tuesday, Sept. 16 when they travel to take on Bentley in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Waltham, Mass. Franklin Pierce’s next home game is Saturday, Sept. 27 against Massachusetts Lowell at 1 p.m. Assumption (2-3, 1-2 NE-10) returns to action on Sept. 16 at Southern Connecticut State.
