Franklin Pierce Drops OT Heartbreaker To Assumption
Huszar scores for the fourth consecutive game to tie for second on school’s all-time list
Mary Beth Huszar tied for second on Franklin Pierce's
career goal-scoring list on Thursday night with the 17th goal of
her career. |
RINDGE, N.H. (September 20,
2007) – In a game that featured multiple momentum
swings, Greyhound midfielder Jenna Luce (Conway, Mass./Frontier
Regional) scored the game-winning goal with 34 seconds remaining in
the first overtime period as Assumption College narrowly escaped
with a 3-2 overtime win over Franklin Pierce University in a
non-conference field hockey match on Thursday night at Sodexho
Field.
Graduate student Mary Beth Huszar (Greenville,
N.H./Mascenic Regional) and freshman Emily
Morrissey (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional) scored
goals for the Ravens, beginning and ending the scoring in the first
70 minutes.
Huszar sent the game into overtime for the Ravens with her fifth
goal of the season with less than 10 minutes remaining in
regulation, scoring an unassisted tally after spinning around a
defender near the right post and finding the far corner of the net.
The goal was Huszar’s 17th of her career, tying her with
Karen Clarke ’00 for second on the school’s all-time
goals-scored list.
Morrissey gave the Ravens a 1-0 lead with just under four minutes
remaining in the first half, scoring her first collegiate goal
unassisted. Morrissey corralled her own rebound and snuck the ball
past Greyhound netminder Jacque DuLong (Merrimack,
N.H./Merrimack).
Luce scored the game-winner on a penalty corner, taking a direct
pass from Brittany Ford (Worcester, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) and
finding a way through a crowd in front of Raven goaltender
Tevis Hannington (Canton, Mass./Notre Dame
Academy).
Sarah Bullock (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) and Hillary Zysk
(Walpole, Mass./Walpole) scored for Assumption to bring the team
back from a 1-0 deficit with two goals early in the second
half.
Both teams had their opportunities, as Assumption held a slight
9-8 advantage in shots on goal and both goaltenders were forced to
make six saves. Franklin Pierce dominated play in the first half,
holding an 8-2 edge in penalty corners and putting five shots on
goal to Assumption’s one. The visitors responded in the
second half, however, holding a 7-2 edge in shots on goal and 7-1
in penalty corners. Fittingly, both teams took three shots in
overtime.
Franklin Pierce (0-9, 0-6 NE-10) will take to the road for two
games, beginning with a Saturday afternoon match against No. 5
Stonehill at noon in Easton, Mass. Assumption (3-5, 1-5 NE-10)
travels to Merrimack for a conference match on Saturday night.
