Jenee Clifford Jenee Clifford scored a goal on Thursday at Massachusetts Lowell.

LOWELL, Mass. (October 12, 2006) – The Franklin Pierce field hockey team suffered a tough 2-1, non-conference loss to UMass Lowell, ranked No. 6 in this week’s National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. The River Hawks rallied from an early 1-0 deficit, scoring two goals late in the first half to earn their tenth victory of the season.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring midway through the first half as sophomore Jenee Clifford (Sandown, N.H./Timberlane) registered her team-leading fourth goal of the season to put the Ravens up 1-0. UMass Lowell responded just 40 seconds later, as senior Sara Hohenberger (Windam, N.H./Salem) posted her team-leading 13th goal of the season to knot the score at 1-1.

In the closing seconds of the first half, UMass Lowell connected for its second goal of the match off a penalty corner, as junior Jayne Vagenas (Harwich, Mass./Harwich) connected for the game-winning goal off a dish from Hohenberger.

UMass Lowell limited Franklin Pierce to just six shots throughout the match as River Hawk goalkeeper, senior Nicole Staiti (Barre, Mass./Quabbin Regional) posted two saves to earn her eighth victory of the season. Franklin Pierce goalkeeper, senior Amanda Pietraszuk (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School) made 12 saves despite the loss.

Franklin Pierce (3-9, 3-7 NE-10) will be in action again on Saturday as it hosts Saint Anselm College at 11 a.m. UMass Lowell (10-3, 7-3 NE-10) travels to Bryant University on Saturday at 7 p.m.
