Huszar nets game-winning penalty stroke to lift Ravens; Pietraszuk collects 16 saves in victory

RINDGE, N.H. (September 14, 2006) – The Franklin Pierce field hockey team posted a 4-3 victory in penalthy strokes over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference action this evening at Sodexho Field. Senior Mary Beth Huszar (Greenville, N.H./Greenville) netted the game-winning goal in stroke play to give Franklin Pierce its first victory of the season.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring early in the first half as sophomore Jenee Clifford (Sandown, N.H./Timberlane) slapped a shot past Assumption goalkeeper Brandi Guertin (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) just 5:58 seconds into the match.

Assumption quickly rallied back, posting two goals in a 5:18 span. Graduate Courtney Nottebart (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and senior Laura DuBois (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) each tallied scores to give the Greyhounds the 2-1 advantage. Less than two minutes later, Huszar responded for Franklin Pierce, collecting her first goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2.

In the second half, Franklin Pierce struck first as freshman Ashley Abernathy (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) recorded her first collegiate goal to give the Ravens a 3-2 lead. Assumption answered midway through the second frame when sophomore Jill Hughes (Brownsville, Vt./Windsor) notched her second goal of the season off a Sarah Bullock (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) assist.

With the scored tied at 3-3, the game headed into overtime. Each team had its scoring opportunities in the extra frames, but neither could convert. Guertin made two of her nine saves in the two overtime periods, while Pietraszuk posted six of her 16 saves to force penalty strokes.

Franklin Pierce took the early 1-0 advantage in stroke play as Clifford converted the Ravens third attempt by pushing the ball past the right side of Guertin. Assumption freshman Michelle Pasquale (Shrewsbury, Mass./ Shrewsbury) immediately retaliated with shot past Pietraszuk to even the strokes at 1-1. Huszar followed with a good attempt for the Ravens to take a 2-1 lead and Pietraszuk clinched the victory with a save on Assumption’s final attempt.

Franklin Pierce (1-1, 1-1 NE-10) will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to Bryant University for a match starting at 7 p.m. Assumption College (1-4, 1-2 NE-10) will host UMass Lowell on Saturday at 10 a.m.
