No. 3 Bentley Runs Past Franklin Pierce, 5-0

Falcons end season with shutout victory

RINDGE, N.H. (October 24, 2004) – The No. 3 nationally ranked Bentley College field hockey team blanked host Franklin Pierce, 5-0 today in Northeast-10 competition. The Falcons closed out their regular season with an overall record of 19-1, including a 15-1 mark in Northeast-10 play. With the loss, Franklin Pierce drops to 5-11 overall and 4-11 in the league.

Bentley dominated play, outshooting the Ravens 23 to three, while earning a 16 to four penalty corner advantage. The Falcons converted on one of those penalty corners in the ninth minute of play, as senior Kerry Kopec (Bethel, Conn./Bethel) notched her fourth goal of the season off a pass from sophomore Lindsey Harrington (Atkinson, N.H./Timberlane Regional). Neither team scored for the remainder of the first half, and Bentley maintained a 1-0 lead at the close of the first frame.

In the second half of the match the Falcons added four goals. Freshman Heather Buda (East Kingston, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) gave Bentley a 2-0 advantage when she banged home a rebound early in the second half for her ninth goal of the season. Just under ten minutes later sophomore Mary Rogers (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) took a Kopec feed and tallied her 22nd goal of the year. Harrington padded the Bentley lead, finding the cage two times. Her 16th goal of the year came with 20:42 remaining in the second half, while her 17th came just 2:50 later. She finished with a match-high five points on the day, as the Falcons held on for a 5-0 victory.

Goalkeepers Kristin Johnson (Reading, Mass./Reading) and Meaghan Johnson (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) combined for the team’s ninth shutout of the season. Kristin Johnson earned her 18th win of the year despite facing zero shots in her 35 minutes of play. Sophomore Amanda Pietraszuk (Clinton, Conn./Morgan School) took the loss for Franklin Pierce. She saved nine shots and surrendered one goal in just under 53 minutes of play. Junior Brandi Guertin (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) played the remaining 17 minutes of the match, saving seven shots.

Franklin Pierce (5-11, 4-11 NE-10) will return to action tomorrow for Senior Day, when they will wrapup their season with a home match versus Northeast-10 foe Saint Anselm at 3:30 p.m. Bentley (19-1, 15-1 NE-10) will be off until Saturday, when they host the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament.
