NEW HAVEN, CONN. (September 15,
2004) – The Franklin Pierce field hockey team lost
their second match of the season today, as they were defeated by
Southern Connecticut State University 2-1 in Northeast-10 action at
Jess Dow Field. The Hawks took advantage of two early goals and a
stifling defense that limited the Ravens to five shots on goal.
Senior defensemen Cori Krajewski (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) supplied
both of the goals for SCSU. Her first goal came in the second
minute of play, as she scored on a pass from sophomore forward
Rachel Ragusa (Bethel, Conn./Bethel). She netted her second goal of
the game off a penalty stroke with just under ten minutes remaining
in the first half. Krajewski’s team-leading fourth goal of
the season proved to be the game winner, as the Hawks defense held
the Ravens attack in check.
The lone goal for Franklin Pierce was scored by freshman forward
Alison Daday (Brewster,
N.Y./Brewster) in the 60th minute of play. Assisting on the
first goal of Daday’s career was junior Trisha Langevin (Bellingham,
Mass./Bellingham).
SCSU goalkeeper Shauntaye Williams (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) saved
four shots en route to her fifth win of the season. Sophomore Amanda Pietraszuk (Clinton, Conn./The
Morgan School) suffered the loss in her first start of the
season despite saving 16 shots.
Franklin Pierce (2-2, 2-2 NE-10) will be in action on Saturday, as
they travel to UMass Lowell for a conference match at 2 p.m.
Southern Connecticut State (5-2, 5-0 NE-10) will travel to Saint
Michael’s College on Saturday for a Northeast-10 battle
beginning at 1 p.m.
