No. 7 Stonehill Edges FPC, 2-1 in OT
Third-seeded Chieftains score 43-seconds into OT to nip sixth-seeded Ravens
EASTON, Mass. (October 24, 2001) -
Third-seeded Stonehill College, ranked No. 7 in this week's
National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFCHA) Division II poll,
scored just 43-seconds into overtime to eliminate sixth-seeded
Franklin Pierce University in the first round of the Northeast-10
Conference Field Hockey Championships at Gorman Field this
afternoon.
Sophomore Julie Aresco netted the gamewinning goal as she took a
feed from junior Melissa Paratore, just after the start of
overtime, and deked FP junior goalkeeper Kasey McClements (Ashland,
Mass./Ashland) for a shot into the back of the net.
The win avenges a 2-1 overtime victory by Franklin Pierce during
the regular season in Winchendon, Mass., as it upset then No. 4
Stonehill on October 6.
The Chieftains opened the scoring as sophomore Caitlin Creen scored
off a rebound after McClements stopped an initial bid by freshman
Heather Roy with 9:44 remaining in the first half.
Franklin Pierce knotted the score with just 20-seconds left in the
opening half, when junior Kelly
Henry (Wyoming, R.I./Chariho Regional) fed classmate Stephanie Bradley (Warrington,
Pa./Miller Place), who snuck a shot through a crowd of
Stonehill defenders and past junior goalkeeper Rebecca Scott into
the lower left corner.
The match nearly ended in regulation, but McClements stymied a
penalty stroke bid by sophomore Libby Hanna with 5:15 remaining in
the second half.
Scott finished the match with five saves for Stonehill, while
McClements registered 11 stops for FPC.
Franklin Pierce wraps up its season with a 7-11 record overall.
Stonehill (15-3) advances to this weekend's NE-10 semifinals,
hosted by Bentley College in Waltham, Mass., where it will play
second-seeded and No. 8 Saint Michael's College on Saturday at 2
p.m.
