FP Field Hockey Team Finishes Strong
Ravens End Regular Season with 6-1 Win over St. Joseph's On Senior Day
WINCHENDON, Mass. (October 23, 2000) -
A three-goal flurry in a span of 35 seconds Monday helped the
Franklin Pierce University field hockey team end the regular season
with a 6-1 non-conference win over St. Joseph's College at the
Winchendon School.
The Ravens (10-6) now head into the first postseason tournament in
the four years the team has been competing at the varsity level. FP
will host Bryant in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference
tournament Wednesday (3 p.m., Winchendon School).
FP struck first Monday on Senior Day when freshman Debbie Jones (Escondido, Calif.) scored
the first of her two goals on an assist from sophomore Kelly Henry (Wyoming, R.I.) in the
sixth minute of the match.
The Monks (8-8) answered back in the 25th minute on a breakaway
goal by senior Tara Gagnon (Dixfield, Maine).
FP took the lead for good three minutes later on a penalty stroke
by senior Lisa Harris (Rutland,
Mass.).
Jones upped the lead to 3-1 in the 52nd minute, and the Ravens
busted the game open by scoring three times in the 66th minute on
goals by sophomore Chrystean Page
(Turner, Maine), senior Heidi Nichols (Fremont, N.H.) and
Jones.
Nichols now has a team-high 11 goals, while Jones and Page have
seven each.
Junior goalkeeper Irene Smith
(Olivebridge, N.Y.) made nine saves for FPC, including one
on a breakaway, while Laura Lombardi (Westport, Mass.) made 28
stops for the Monks.
The Ravens will host a first round game in the NE-10 tournament
this Wednesday at 3:00 when the Bulldogs of Bryant College make a
return trip to The Winchendon School. FP took the regular season
meeting, 4-2.
