Bates Nets Hat Trick As No. 6 Bentley Bests Franklin Pierce, 5-1
WALTHAM, Mass. (October 3, 2000) --
Sophomore Kristyn Bates (Greenfield/Greenfield HS) had her second
career hat trick as No. 6 nationally ranked Bentley College
extended its home winning streak to 43 with a 5-1 win over Franklin
Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey Tuesday
night.
The victory, Bentley’s fourth straight, pushed the Falcons
(9-2, 4-1 NE-10) ahead of Franklin Pierce into second place in the
conference. The Ravens, a newcomer to the NE-10 this season,
dropped to 5-4 and 4-2 NE-10.
Bates, who became the second Greenfield resident in as many games
to have a hat trick for the Falcons (Tara Zraunig turned the feat
Saturday against Millersville), got Bentley on the scoreboard with
10:58 left in the first half. Her second and third goals of the
evening broke the contest open late, coming with 14:27 and 4:05
left on the second-half clock.
Two minutes before intermission, junior All-America Allyson Bunce
(East Dennis/ Dennis-Yarmouth Reg. HS) made it a 2-0 contest when
she netted her conference-leading 15th off a penalty corner, with
senior Ann Marie Sheridan (Canton/Canton HS) providing the
assist.
Also scoring for Bentley was sophomore Carolyn Bolster
(Walpole/Walpole HS), who tallied her third of the fall in the
first minute of the second half.
The Ravens’ only goal was scored by senior Karen Clarke (Brewster) with 31:45 left
in regulation, cutting the Bentley lead to 3-1 at the time.
Notching the victory in net was freshman Liz Novis
(Watertown/Watertown HS), who made seven saves.
