Volleyball Swept at Le Moyne, 3-0

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (October 30, 2021) -- Freshman Hannah Hillis (San Clemente, Calif.) came up with a season-best and match-high 21 digs on Saturday, but the Franklin Pierce University volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss (25-17, 25-23, 26-24) on the road at Le Moyne, in Northeast-10 Conference play at Ted Grant Court. Junior Madeleine Kennedy led the way for Le Moyne, as she hit .343 and hammered out 17 kills.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 10-10 (4-5 NE10), while Le Moyne improves to 4-14 (2-8 NE10).

The Ravens led the first set, 10-9, but then lost control from there. Le Moyne ran off 10 straight points, including nine on the serve of senior Emily Mosack, to jump out to a 19-10 lead. Senior Kendyl Gorick had a trio of kills in the streak. In all, it was a 16-7 run for the Dolphins to finish the set.

Franklin Pierce led the second set as late as 18-15, but Le Moyne called a timeout and then rattled off six straight points to take the lead for good. The Ravens then had set point in the third, at 24-21, but the Dolphins finished off the match with five straight points, including a pair of kills from Kennedy. Graduate student Emily Yancone finished the match off with an ace.

Nobody was able to get into double digits offensively for Franklin Pierce, though junior Ingrid Lindstrom (Dudley, Mass.) hit .400 with eight kills. Hillis led the team with nine kills, though she hit .161 over 31 attacks. The Ravens ran the offense through senior Kennedy Garnhart (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who had 13 assists, and sophomore Maddie Ward (Wolfeboro, N.H.), who had 11. The Ravens hit just .105 as a team over 124 attacks.

Defensively, three Ravens were in double digits, as Hillis led the way with 21 digs, followed by sophomore Morgan Schmutzler (Lockport, Ill.) with 14 and junior Tessa Brandt (Foster, R.I.) with 12. Senior Cierra Dolan (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) had a match-high five block assists.

Kennedy was the only Dolphin in double digits offensively, with her 17 kills, as she carried a Le Moyne unit which hit only .154 on the way to the win. She worked primarily off the set of Yancone, who dished out 31 assists.

Le Moyne had four players finish with double-digit dig totals: freshman Maethavee Siphakongviseth with 16, Mosack and freshman Madison Dembroski with 13 apiece, and freshman Isabella Leslie with 10. Gorick recorded three blocks (one solo).

The Ravens are back home to host a pair of New York schools in NE10 contests next weekend, on Nov. 5-6. Franklin Pierce will host Adelphi at 6 p.m. on Friday and Pace at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
