Leidhold named Northeast-10 Rookie of the Year, Volleyball places four with All-Conference Honors

RINDGE, N.H. (November 19, 2015) – Freshman Katie Leidhold (Acushnet, Mass.) broke through with the biggest award to come into Rindge this fall, as she was named Northeast-10 Rookie of the Year, along with All-Northeast-10 First team honors, and a unanimous selection to the Northeast-10 All-Rookie team. Joining her with first team honors was junior Aiden Garcia (Eagle Pass, Texas), while sophomore setter Hannah Runge (Deltona, Fla.) was named to the second team. Rounding out the slew of awards for the crimson and grey was freshman Abigail Sonuga (Haverhill, Mass.) who joined Leidhold as an All-Rookie team selection. All awards were announced by the conference on Thursday afternoon.

Leidhold ran house by rookie standards, with numbers well supporting her honors. Appearing in all 28 matches for the Ravens, she has averaged 3.04 kills per set and 4.03 digs per set, which each rank tops amongst others in the conference. In those 28 matches, she accumulated 17 double-doubles, all starting with her collegiate debut against Southern Nazarene with 11 kills and 18 digs. She twice topped 20 kills in a game, with her most notable performance putting her into the program record books with a 27 kill, 23 dig performance in a Ravens 3-2 win over Saint Rose at the Fieldhouse on October 23rd. She also ranks fourth in the conference in total points (404.0), and second in total service aces (43).

Garcia was once again a force at the net for the Ravens, as she has earned All-Conference honors each of her three years in Rindge, progressively climbing the ladder to the first team this season. She ranks fifth in the conference in hitting percentage at .292, while she averages 2.54 kills per set and is ranked 12th in total kills as well. Defensively, she ranks 10th in the conference in total blocks with 79. With her value on both facets of the game, she is ranked 11th in total points, and twice collected 19 kills in a match.

Runge has become the glue to the Ravens offense since her arrival in Rindge last season, making strides in her game this season as one of the most recognizable setters in the conference. As a sophomore, she ranks second in the conference in total assists, and fourth in assists per set at a 9.89 clip. She averaged 2.45 digs per set and 0.39 blocks per set, showing a solid defensive presence on the floor as well. She topped 50 assists eight times throughout the season as well, with a year-high of 55 coming versus Caldwell on September 12.

Sonuga has quietly but together a spectacular rookie season, with her play anything but silent. Her athleticism helped catapult her to the top of the conference in blocks, ranking 13th with an average of 0.83 per set, and seventh in total blocks with 93. She however has done it best when one-on-one at the net, ranking fourth with 25 solo blocks. Her offensive skills are to not be overshadowed, as she averaged 2.17 kills per set, and ranks 20th in total kills with 243. She notched double-digit kills nine times, topping out at 18 at Pace on November 14.

The Ravens now await their fate on the conclusion of their season, as they hope to be selected into the NCAA East Regional. The selection show for the eight-team field will be held on Monday, November 23 at 7:30 p.m.
