Volleyball strong effort comes up short, not enough in 3-0 loss to Adelphi

RINDGE, N.H. (October 24, 2014) – Senior Catie Swiderski (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and freshman Hannah St. Jean (Olympia, Wash.) both came out with strong offensive showings on Friday night, but it wasn't enough to down current Northeast-10 top-dog Adelphi as the Panthers took the victory 3-0, snapping the Ravens six-game winning streak at home this season.

The match immediately became intensified with the loud, supportive crowd for Franklin Pierce, which kicked the play from both sides up a notch. Adelphi came out with the first four points of the match, before the Ravens were able to claw back a few points later. The set would flip-flop all the way through the end, including extra rallies to determine a winner. It would be Adelphi coming out with the first set victory 27-25. In the second set, the Ravens ran into some trouble with mistakes. They were not able to recover from those throughout, as the Panthers also took the second set 25-18. In the final set, the Panthers would have to go against a resilient Ravens club, who throughout the season had not yet lost on their home floor at the Fieldhouse. Much like the first set, play went back and forth all the way throughout without any team going ahead by more than two points. Extra rallies were once again needed to determine the winner, but the Ravens could not respond with their backs against the wall with the game 22-19. Adelphi was able to capitalize, tie the game at 25-25, and take the set 27-25, thus the match 3-0.

Swiderski ended the day as the only Raven in double-figure kills with 13 and a hitting percentage of .242, while St. Jean lead the Ravens in kill percentage at .545 with six kills in 11 attempts, finishing as the second highest Raven in that category. Freshman Hannah Runge (Deltona, Fla.) led the way in assists with 25 on the night. On a quiet defensive night, St. Jean pitched in with two of the teams three blocks, while Runge and sophomore Kelsey Hausman (Sandy, Utah) led Franklin Pierce in digs with eight.

For Adelphi, seniors Kaitlyn DeStefano (13) and Haley Blunt (11) were factors in the Panthers win, as both finished in double-figure kills. DeStefano also finished with a .500 attack percentage in 22 attempts, while graduate student Samantha Breidenbach ended with a percentage of .375, recording seven kills in 16 attempts. Junior Alayna Jackson tossed out 38 assists, while defensively Blunt led in digs with nine.

For both teams, errors were a big part of the game at some points, as Adelphi recorded 38 overall errors, while Franklin Pierce ended with 31.

The Ravens return to the floor tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, October 25 at 1 p.m. when they take on Pace.
