RINDGE, N.H. (September 7,
2007) – The Franklin Pierce University volleyball
team took the first two games easily and then held on for a 3-1
(30-14, 30-15, 30-32, 30-22) victory over Concordia College in a
non-conference match at the Franklin Pierce Fieldhouse on Friday
evening.
Sophomore Caitlynn Parnell (Medina, Texas/Medina)
and redshirt freshman Michelle Koike (San Francisco,
Calif./Gonzaga University) once again were superb for the
Ravens, as both players tied career highs with 19 and 13 kills,
respectively. Freshman libero Chelsie Kohout (Harrison
Township, Mich./L’Anse Creuse) pitched in with a
career-high and team-high 25 digs, while junior co-captain
Karissa Hookstadt (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo)
recorded a season-high 52 assists, eight digs, a career-high six
service aces and five kills.
Franklin Pierce excelled in the first two games of the match, only
allowing a combined 29 points. In game one, the Ravens used a 10-1
run that turned a 10-8 score into a 20-9 game to cruise to the win.
The home team then strung together a seven-point run early in game
two that allowed the Ravens to gain a comfortable edge that would
never get below six points.
The Ravens looked to have the match sewn up while serving at 26-18
in game three, but the Clippers fought back and took 14 of the last
18 points to force a fourth game. Franklin Pierce again started
strong in the fourth and final game, holding a 16-5 lead and
fending off the hard-charging Clippers to earn the win.
Concordia was led by double-double efforts from freshman Maddy
Lorenz (Spokane, Wash./Joel E. Harris), who recorded 14 kills and
17 digs, and senior Tiffany Edwards (Baytown, Texas/Midland CC),
who had 10 kills and 11 digs.
Franklin Pierce (3-6, 1-0 NE-10) will look to extend its winning
streak to three games when it returns to Northeast-10 play tomorrow
afternoon with a 1 p.m. matchup at the Fieldhouse against Saint
Anselm. Concordia (3-4, 0-0 ECC) will take on another Northeast-10
school, Southern New Hampshire, tomorrow afternoon.
