NEW ORLEANS (May 24, 2021) -- Sophomore Julieth Nwosu (Brockton, Mass.) and assistant coach Whitney Cyr both hauled in some serious hardware late last week, as the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced its end-of-season All-Region awards. Nwosu was named the East Region Women’s Field Athlete of the Year, while Cyr was selected as East Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year. Nwosu added a pair of All-East Region accolades to headline 13 total All-Region nods for the Ravens, across their men’s and women’s programs.

Nwosu is the first Raven in program history, man or woman, to pick up a regional-level major award as a field athlete. Franklin Pierce has had five previous athletes take home USTFCCCA East Region Track Athlete of the Year honors. In addition, Cyr’s selection marked the first time in program history the Ravens have earned the regional Assistant Coach of the Year award as well.

Nwosu was the East Region’s top performer in the shot put (14.09m), and was the only female athlete in the region to hit the NCAA Championships provisional qualifying mark in the event, with a throw which finished ranked 31st in the nation. She also picked up All-Region honors in the discus, with a mark which ranked third in the region (40.10m). Nwosu’s double led a collection of nine All-Region awards for the Ravens women’s team.

The USTFCCCA bestows All-Region honors to the top five individuals in each event in their respective region, as well as all members of any relay team which is ranked among the top three in the region.

Younger sister, freshman Nkechi Nwosu (Brockton, Mass.) and graduate student Bethaney Donnelly (Manchester, United Kingdom) each picked up a pair of All-East awards as well. Donnelly was the region’s top performer in the 10,000 meters (38:36) and ranked third in the 5000 meters (18:07), while Nkechi Nwosu was second in the discus (40.44m) and third in the shot put (12.50m).

Three other Ravens on the women’s team added All-Region performances as well. Junior Paola Brena (Queretaro, Mexico) finished third in the region in the high jump (1.60m), junior Stephanie Phoenix (Wallingford, Conn.) was fourth in the pole vault (3.10m), and sophomore Nyjah Young-Bey (Montclair, N.J.) placed second in the 400 meters (57.19).

Meanwhile, for the men, four different Ravens took home one All-East Region honor apiece. Freshman Brogan Bonsaint (Somersworth, N.H.) led the way and ranked third in the region and 29th in the country in the javelin (58.92m), as one of just three throwers in the region to achieve an NCAA provisional mark. He was joined among All-East awardees by sophomore Connor Everidge (Baldwinville, Mass.) at fourth in the region in the shot put (15.31m), senior Cody Tallent (Bellows Falls, Vt.) at fourth in the steeplechase (10:04), and freshman Ryan Walker (Seabrook, N.H.) at fourth in the 800 meters (1:54.07).
