Women's Tennis Comes Up Short In NE10 Championship, 4-3 at SNHU

MANCHESTER, N.H. (10/23/22) –  In a pursuit of their third straight NE10 title, the #2 Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team clashed with top-ranked Southern New Hampshire University in the 2022 Northeast-10 Championship final at the Ouellete Stadium Tennis Courts. Despite maintaining the lead through the majority of play, the Ravens found themselves victim to a late comeback by the SNHU, who claimed three straight wins in singles to claim their fourth title in program history by a score of 4-3.

After finishing runner-up, women's tennis turns their attention to the upcoming spring season and wraps up the fall with a 10-2 (8-2 NE10) record. Southern New Hampshire completes a perfect fall season, finishing 12-0 (9-0 NE10) with the Championship victory.

The doubles action opened with a triumph at No.3 between Ravens Zoe Asterio Correa (Toronto, Ontario) and Jillian Pagliuca (Taunton, Mass.), defeating Isabella Andrade and Guntra Upeniece by a score of 6-3. After a loss at the No.2 position, the available point came down to a No.1 doubles tiebreak, as Ana Platisa (Belgrade, Serbia) and Liria Loria (La Paz, Bolivia) prevailed over opponents Magdalena Hubickova and Alexxa Etienne 7-6, securing doubles for the Ravens.

Moving into singles play, the Ravens cruised to a 3-2 lead as juniors Maria Penalver (Las Palmas, Spain) and Aynara Ferraz (Canary Islands, Spain) each earned victories. Ferraz was the first to finish at No.5, and claimed victory (6-1, 6-2) over SNHU's Isabella Andrade. After dropping a decision at No.6 singles, Penalver earned the next victory for the Ravens at the No.1 spot, handing Magdalena Hubickova her second loss of the afternoon in two sets (6-2, 6-3). However, the Penman were determined to play spoiler on the Ravens, and secured hard battled wins at the second and third courts from Alina Kupfer and Alexxa Etienne.

With the match now tied up at 3-all, the final showdown came to No.4 singles between Zoe Asterio Correa and Southern New Hampshire's Verena Weindl. In a closely contested first set, Weindl claimed the victory by a score of 6-4, but was pushed to the limit in the second by Asterio Correa. From a 5-5 deadlock, the two players continued to trade points up until a tiebreak, with the final point eventually falling into Southern New Hampshire's hands (6-4, 7-6), earning them their first title win since 2012.

Following the match, both Maria Penalver and Ana Platisa were presented with postseason honors, as each were named to the 2022 Northeast-10's All-Championship Team.

The official schedule for the Ravens' women's tennis spring season has yet to be finalized, with the team expected back in March of 2023.
