No. 48 Women’s Tennis Falls to No. 2 Barry in National Quarterfinal, 4-0

SURPRISE, Ariz. (May 19, 2021) -- The run finally came to an end for the No. 48 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team on Wednesday afternoon, in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Championship. The seventh seed at the finals site, the Ravens came up against second-seeded and No. 2 nationally ranked Barry and suffered a 4-0 defeat at Surprise Tennis & Racquet Club. The NCAA Championship is being hosted by the Pacific West Conference and the City of Surprise.

With the loss, Northeast-10 Conference and East Region champion Franklin Pierce suffers its only loss of the season and sees the most successful campaign in program history come to a close at 14-1. With the win, two-time defending national champion Barry improves to 13-0 and has won 32 consecutive matches dating to April of 2019.

The Buccaneers would not drop a set on the day while sweeping four points from the Ravens. Doubles play was first, with Barry taking victories at first and second doubles to secure the doubles point. Barry sports the No. 10 doubles pairing in the country at first doubles, and juniors Deniz Khazan and Madeline Bosnjak showed their prowess, as they posted a 6-0 win over graduate student Himani Mor (Sonipat, India) and sophomore Liria Loria (La Paz, Bolivia).

At second doubles, freshman Maria Penalver Aguilo (Las Palmas, Spain) and sophomore Laura Alvarez Tello (Vigo, Spain) suffered a 6-3 loss at the hands of seniors Jil Engelmann and Julie Razafindranaly. After second doubles clinched the doubles point, third doubles was left unfinished, with seniors Kim Moosbacher and Daniela Farfan holding a 5-2 lead over graduate student Estela Carra (Logrono, Spain) and freshman Zoe Asterio Correa (Toronto, Ontario).

In singles play, the Ravens ran up against three of the top 26 singles players in the nation, who made quick work of the remaining three points for Barry. At first singles, No. 2 Khazan cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Penalver Aguilo. At third singles, it was a clean, 6-0, 6-0 sweep for No. 26 Bosnjak over Loria. No. 20 Engelmann closed things out at second singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Mor.

After the team match was decided, fourth through sixth singles were left unfinished, with junior Xiyao Wang, Razafindranaly and junior Mariia Skyba holding one-set leads over Alvarez Tello, Carra and Asterio Correa, respectively.
