Martikainen, Perez-Acosta Receive USC All-American Honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (12/8/22) – The United Soccer Coaches offices unveiled the 2022 Women's Soccer All-America Team on Wednesday afternoon, naming junior defender Aino Martikainen (Jarvenpaa, Finland) and sophomore forward Jazmine Perez-Acosta (Cape Coral, Fla.) recipients of the national honor. Martikainen was selected as a First Team honoree, while Perez Acosta was tabbed to the Third Team.

Both players broke out of the Regional barrier, and are receiving the All-America honors for the first time as collegiate players. Both players prior to this announcement were also named to the United Soccer Coaches All-East Region First Team.

Martikainen continues to add to a lengthy list of career accolades, having already been selected to both All-Conference and All-East Region First Teams this season. The Raven captain, and NE10 Defensive Player of the Year, held the line this season for Pierce as the team limited opposing attacks to just 0.84 goals scored and 4.57 shots on goal allowed per game this season, producing 11 total shutouts. In 23 starts this season, Martikainen finished second-overall on the lineup in scoring with 16 points, scoring six goals aside three helpers.

Jasmine Perez-Acosta performed opposite to the Raven defensive game, challenging opposing defenders with 48 shot attempts this season. As a sophomore this season, Perez-Acosta finished top-three on the scoresheet for the women's squad, totaling six goals and one assist for 13 points. Following selection to the All-Northeast-10 First Team, Perez-Acosta was additionally to the D2CCA All-East Region Second Team.

Women's Soccer concluded the regular season with a 16-4-3 overall record, which was their most successful season performance since 2018. Their official run came to a close, in the NCAA Championship quarterfinal, where the Ravens fell to No.2 West Chester in Double overtime by a 2-1 score. However, the quarterfinal round defeat marked the program's deepest NCAA tournament run since the 2006 season.
