Women’s Soccer’s Martikainen Claims Third Straight NE10 Defensive Player of the Week Honor

MANSFIELD, Mass. (October 24, 2022) -- Once again, junior Aino Martikainen (Järvenpää, Finland) of the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team has been named as Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Week, this time for the week ending on Oct. 23, as announced on Monday afternoon by the league office.

It is the third straight selection as Defensive Player of the Week for Martikainen, who headed up a back line which produced a pair of shutouts and surrendered just six shots on goal in a 2-0-0 week on the road for the Ravens. On Wednesday afternoon, she helped hold New Haven to five shots on goal and contributed on both goals in a 2-0 win, as she scored the game-winner and later assisted on the second tally. On Saturday afternoon, worked to hold Assumption to just one on-target shot in a 1-0 win. In all, Martikainen attempted six shots, including three on goal, over the two games.

On the season, Martikainen and the Franklin Pierce defense have yielded just 0.63 goals and 3.94 shots on goal per game. It is Martikainen's fourth selection as NE10 Defensive Player of the Week this season.

Martikainen and the rest of the Ravens (13-2-1, 10-2-0 NE10) are on the road on Wednesday night, to wrap up the regular season with a non-conference game at Bridgeport at 7 p.m.
