No. 17 Women’s Soccer Posts Third Straight Shutout, Blanks New Haven, 2-0

Emilie Fox

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (October 18, 2022) -- The No. 17 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team kept things rolling on the road on Tuesday afternoon. Junior Aino Martikainen (Järvenpää, Finland) factored in on both goals at Zolad Stadium, as the Ravens tallied their third straight shutout and their sixth consecutive win, with a 2-0 Northeast-10 Conference victory at New Haven. Martikainen struck for the eventual game-winner in the 25th minute, and later assisted on an 86th-minute insurance marker.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 12-2-1 (9-2-0 NE10) and has won six in a row for the first time since it won eight straight to open the 2019 campaign. With the loss, New Haven falls to 4-9-3 (2-8-1 NE10) and is winless in its last six (0-5-1).

Franklin Pierce largely controlled the run of play on Tuesday, posting advantages of 16-8 in shot attempts and 10-5 in shots on goal. The opener came in the 25th minute, and would be all the Ravens needed. Off a set piece from the midfield, freshman Ruby Conroy (Hawthorne, N.J.) wound up with space to work with and tee up a shot in the right side of the penalty area. New Haven graduate student goalkeeper Amanda McQuillan was able to get her hands to the attempt and deflect the ball off the crossbar, but the rebound resulted in a goalmouth scramble. Martikainen and sophomore Makenzie Shean (Agawam, Mass.) both had multiple attempts from inside the six-yard box, before the former was able to finally knock the ball into the left side of the net for her fourth goal of the season.

For the majority of the proceedings, it would be all that was in the contest. The Ravens ultimately created the 2-0 final with an insurance tally in the 86th minute. Martikainen took a free kick from just inside the midfield stripe on the left-wing side and curled it into the box. On one hop, the service found sophomore Delaney Farinha (Preston, Conn.), who volleyed her fourth of the season into the left side of the goal from just outside the top of the six-yard box.

Sophomore Emilie Fox (Bridgewater, Mass.) stopped all five shots on her goal to pick up the win (8-1-1) and her fourth shutout of the campaign. Her third straight clean sheet ran her scoreless streak to 312:10. At the other end of the field, McQuillan (4-9-3) made eight saves against 10 shots in defeat for New Haven.

The Ravens are back on the road on Saturday, Oct. 22, for their NE10 regular-season finale at Assumption. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.
