Women’s Soccer’s Martikainen Named as NE10 Defensive Player of the Week

MANSFIELD, Mass. (October 18, 2022) -- Junior Aino Martikainen (Järvenpää, Finland) of the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team has been named as Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight week, this time for the week ending on Oct. 16, as announced on Monday afternoon by the league office.

Martikainen headed up a back line which produced a pair of shutouts and surrendered just four shots on goal in a 2-0-0 week for the Ravens. At the other end of the field, she contributed a goal and an assist, for three points, and mixed in three shots (two on goal) as well. On the road at No. 19 nationally ranked Adelphi on Wednesday, Martikainen assisted on the 88th-minute game-winner and helped hold the Panthers to just five shot attempts (three on goal) in a 1-0 victory. Back home on Saturday afternoon, she scored a penalty kick in the 30th minute which stood as the game-winner and helped hold Saint Michael's to just two shots (one on goal) in a 2-0 Ravens win.

On the season, Martikainen and the Franklin Pierce defense have yielded just 0.71 goals and 4.07 shots on goal per game. It is Martikainen's second straight selection as NE10 Defensive Player of the Week, as well as her third of the season.

Martikainen and the rest of the Ravens (11-2-1, 8-2-0 NE10) are on the road on Tuesday afternoon, for a 4 p.m. NE10 contest at New Haven.
