Three-Goal Second Half Sinks No. 25 Women’s Soccer at Le Moyne, 3-1

Delaney Farinha

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (September 27, 2022) -- With a freshly-minted national ranking in hand, things got a little leaky for the No. 25 Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team on Tuesday afternoon, in the rain at Ted Grant Field. The Ravens struck first, in the 20th minute, courtesy of sophomore Delaney Farinha (Preston, Conn.), but then conceded three times in the second half, as home-standing Le Moyne posted a 3-1 victory in the Northeast-10 Conference affair.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 6-2-1 (3-2-0 NE10). Le Moyne improves to 3-4-2 (1-4-1 NE10).

In the first half, the Ravens outshot the Dolphins 7-2, and also struck for the only goal of the stanza. In the 20th minute, sophomore Eleonora Franco (Verona, Italy) made a long run down the left wing and into the corner with the ball, before hitting a cross. The service dropped right to the head of Farinha 10 yards in front of the goal, and the sophomore directed her third goal of the season into the left side of the net.

In the second half, the Dolphins turned the tables and outshot Franklin Pierce, 8-5, while setting off on the comeback trail. In the 47th minute, sophomore Hildur Unnarsdottir swung the ball in from the right side on a corner kick. Sophomore goalkeeper Gabby Calidonio (Flagler Beach, Fla.) went for the catch, but the ball went in and out of her hands, then dropped to the feat of senior Reagan Sames in the goalmouth, for the latter's first goal of the season, as Le Moyne leveled the score just 2:18 into the second half.

In the 66th minute, another corner kick led to a goalmouth scramble. Calidonio made the first save on the play, against Sames, but freshman Payton Khadra was on the scene to put home the rebound for her first collegiate goal.

Just 1:59 later, in the 68th minute, yet another corner resulted in a foul in the penalty area, which meant a penalty kick for Le Moyne. Unnarsdottir put the kick from the spot into the lower-left corner of the net to score her team-leading third of the season and give the Dolphins a 3-1 lead they would hold the rest of the way.

The Ravens finished the game outshooting the Dolphins 12-10. Sophomore Emilie Fox (Bridgewater, Mass.) got the start in net and made one save against one shot in the first half. Calidonio (4-1-0) played the second half, made three saves against six shots and suffered the loss. Senior goalkeeper Allison Moreau (3-4-2) made seven saves against eight shots in the win for Le Moyne.

Franklin Pierce will return home to Sodexo Field on Friday, Sept. 30, when they take on Bentley University in a 6 p.m. kickoff.
