Women’s Soccer Edged at SCSU, 1-0

Franklin Pierce women's soccer

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (October 13, 2021) – A 71st-minute penalty kick would provide the only scoring on Wednesday night at Jess Dow Field, as the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team paid a visit to Southern Connecticut State for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Senior Kelsey Burr put the spot kick away for the host Owls, who pulled out a 1-0 victory.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 6-3-2 (3-3-2 NE10), while SCSU improves to 3-5-1 (2-3-1 NE10).

The game played relatively even throughout, statistically. Each team attempted 11 shots on the evening, though SCSU enjoyed a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Ravens earned two corner kicks, to one for the Owls.

All the game had in it was a solitary marker, in the 71st minute. An errant hand got in the way of a clearance attempt for the Ravens inside their own penalty area, and the resultant handball meant SCSU was awarded with a penalty kick. Burr slotted her shot into the lower-left side of the net for her second goal of the season.

Franklin Pierce was able to put one shot on frame at the other end after the penalty, in search of an equalizer, but freshman Salome Kerguillec (Landerneau, France) was denied by graduate student goalkeeper Allie Smith in the 87th minute.

Freshman keeper Abby Calidonio (Flagler Beach, Fla.) finished with six saves against seven shots and suffered the loss (5-2-2) in front of the Franklin Pierce net. Smith (3-5-1) turned aside all four shots on her goal to record her second shutout of the year.

The Ravens return home on Saturday to host Adelphi in an NE10 contest at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, at Sodexo Field.
