Three-Goal Second Half Sees Women’s Soccer Past Saint Anselm, 3-1

Jasmine Perez-Acosta

MANCHESTER, N.H. (October 5, 2021) – After a lackluster first half, the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team hit its stride in the second half on the road on Tuesday afternoon. The Ravens poured in a trio of goals in less than 12 minutes to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 win over Saint Anselm. Sophomore Hailey Goodman (Blackstone, Mass.) notched a goal and an assist to lead the way in the Northeast-10 Conference contest at Melucci Field.

With the win, the Ravens improve to 5-2-2 (2-2-2 NE10), while Saint Anselm falls to 5-3-1 (3-3-1 NE10).

It was a slog in the first half for the Ravens, who could not muster much of anything resembling a threat towards the Saint Anselm goal over the first three-quarters of an hour. The only goal in the opening 45 minutes came from distance, as the homestanding Hawks struck in the 26th minute. Freshman Alyssa McColl fired a shot from 30 yards away, which narrowly slipped over the fingertips of a leaping Gabby Calidonio (Flagler Beach, Fla.), the Franklin Pierce keeper. The ball clattered off the crossbar, but then ricocheted off Calidonio's back and wound up in the net to open the scoring.

Franklin Pierce turned the tide of the game within the first 15 minutes of the second half. The equalizer came in the 55th minute, after Goodman sent a cross into the goalmouth from the right-wing side. Sophomore Anna Crapanzano (Milano, Italy) was about 10 yards from goal, in the middle of the box, and went to the ground as she rocketed a volley into the top-left corner for a highlight-reel goal, her fourth of the season.

The Ravens took the lead for good just 3:41 later, in the 59th minute, with a strike from distance of their own. Freshman Jasmine Perez-Acosta (Cape Coral, Fla.) stood over a free kick some 30 yards from goal and elected to take care of business herself. She put the ball straight on target from there, and placed her shot over a leaping Kate Macaluso for her fourth goal of the campaign.

Franklin Pierce added an insurance marker in the 67th minute, to make it three goals in a span of 11:48. Goodman made it a three-point day, as she buried a rebound after a shot from junior Viridiana Vazquez Kloss (Veracruz, Mexico) was turned aside. Goodman's fourth of the season tied her with Crapanzano and Perez-Acosta for the team lead and ultimately created the 3-1 final.

Calidonio (5-1-2) piled up 10 saves -- the most of her young career -- against 11 shots to pick up the win in front of the Franklin Pierce net. Macaluso (5-3-1) made three stops, against six shots, in a losing effort for the Hawks.

The Ravens are back home on Saturday, Oct. 9, for an NE10 contest against New Haven at 4 p.m. at Sodexo Field.
