Women’s Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw with Assumption

RINDGE, N.H. (October 1, 2016) – Freshman forward Sophie Cousineau (Milton, Mass.) headed home the equalizer in the 80th minute on Saturday night, as the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Assumption in Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field. Freshman midfielder Alexis Stowell had Assumption's goal off of a first-half corner kick in the 26th minute.

With the tie, Franklin Pierce moves to 4-2-2 (2-2-2 Northeast-10), while Assumption now stands at 5-4-1 (3-3-1 Northeast-10).

Assumption opened the scoring off of a corner kick in the 26th minute. Senior midfielder Kelsey Pietruska took the corner from the left-wing side and it wound up long on the right side on a bounce. From the top of the 18-yard box towards the right side, Stowell got her foot on top of a volley and drove a one-hop shot into the left side of the net for her first collegiate goal.

Franklin Pierce eventually found the equalizer in the 80th minute on a free kick. Sophomore forward Nathalia Maria da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) took the kick from approximately 30 yards out on the right side and dropped it in front of the right post, about eight yards from goal. Cousineau was able to get her head to the ball and redirect it inside the right post for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Overtime went without any further scoring, despite chances at both ends of the field, as the game went on to finish as a 1-1 draw.

Junior goalkeeper Casey Cook (Beverly, Mass.) made five saves against eight shots on goal on the way to the tie (4-2-2) in net for Franklin Pierce, while the defense chipped in a pair of saves by clearing shots off the line. At the other end of the field, Assumption freshman Alexis Nason (2-2-1) made seven saves against eight shots on goal.

The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, Oct. 4, when they remain home to host Saint Rose in a Northeast-10 contest. Opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Sodexo Field.
