Chaet, Cousineau Power Women’s Soccer Past New Haven, 3-0

RINDGE, N.H. (September 28, 2016) – After a scoreless first half, the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team poured in three goals in the second half on Wednesday afternoon at Sodexo Field to put together a 3-0 win over New Haven. Senior midfielder Nicole Chaet (Tewksbury, Mass.) and freshman forward Sophie Cousineau (Milton, Mass.) each had a goal and an assist in the Northeast-10 Conference victory.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 4-2-1 (2-2-1 Northeast-10), while New Haven falls to 4-4-1 (1-4-1 Northeast-10).

After a scoreless first half, the Ravens struck three times in the opening 10 minutes of the second half to build to the eventual 3-0 final. First, in the 49th minute, sophomore midfielder Nathalia Maria da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) took a free kick from 30 yards out on the left-wing side. Her kick dropped at the far post, where Chaet was able to get a foot on the ball and flip it into the top of the net for her second goal of the season.

Just 69 seconds later, in the 50th minute, Cousineau doubled the lead to 2-0 by tying for the team lead with her fourth goal of the campaign. Chaet played the ball forward from the midfield to Cousineau, who found a shooting lane from the left side at the top of the penalty area. She didn't get everything on the shot, but got enough to beat New Haven junior goalkeeper Deandra Nash inside the left post.

Finally, in the 55th minute, graduate student forward Amber Dempster (Belfast, Northern Ireland) capped the scoring with her first goal of the season. Cousineau provided the setup with a cross from the right-wing side along the end line. The cross dropped at the top of the six-yard box, where Dempster met the ball with her head to put it into the left side of the net.

Franklin Pierce enjoyed statistical advantages through the afternoon, with margins of 20-9 in shot attempts, 9-4 in shots on goal and 4-0 in corner kicks.

Junior goalkeeper Casey Cook (Beverly, Mass.) logged the first 86:04 in net for the Ravens and stopped all four shots on her goal to pick up the win (4-2-1). Freshman Ashley Spellman (Lancaster, Mass.) took over for the final 3:56, but did not face a shot. At the other end of the field, Nash (3-3-1) made six saves against nine shots on goal in a losing effort.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 1, when they remain home to host Assumption in a Northeast-10 contest. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Sodexo Field.
