RINDGE, N.H. (October 12, 2011) – The Franklin Pierce University women’s soccer team played to a scoreless draw, 0-0, with American International on Wednesday night at Sodexo Field in Rindge. Franklin Pierce moved to 5-6-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the Northeast-10, while AIC moved to 3-8-2 and 3-6-2 in league play.
Franklin Pierce outshot AIC, 17-10, in the contest, including putting eight on goal. Sophomore forward Talita Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) fired a match-high eight shots, including putting a pair on net. Alana Figurido (South Hamilton, Mass.), Aya Noguchi (Tokyo, Japan) and Julie Foster (Dennis, Mass.) each put a pair of shots on goal as well.
Pereira had a great scoring opportunity midway through the first overtime, but AIC goalkeeper Amber Swanston made an outstanding leaping save to preserve the scoreless match. Foster also had a terrific scoring opportunity later in the first extra session, but Swanston was able to make a diving save to her left to keep the ball out of the net.
Nikki Muhlberg fired off a team-high three shots for AIC. Caroline Boyce added one shot which came with just 13 seconds remaining in regulation. That shot came from the top of the box towards the lower left corner of the net. Franklin Pierce keeper Jocelyn Leon (Lenox, Mass.) made a terrific diving save to stop the shot. However, the ball caromed off Leon and towards AIC attacker Mariah Shade, who took the ball and tried to fire a low shot towards the same corner of the net. But Leon was able to right herself in time and make another save to send the match into extra minutes. Leon made four saves to move her record to 5-6-1 on the season. Swanston moved her record to 3-6-2 after making eight saves.
Franklin Pierce returns to action Saturday when the Ravens play host to Southern Connecticut State at 1 p.m. in Sodexo Field.
