Women's Soccer Concludes 2010 Season with 3-1 Loss to Bridgeport in NCAA Tournament First Round
Amanda Panaro scores 20th goal of the season
ALBANY, N.Y. (November 12, 2010) -- The Franklin Pierce
University women's soccer team concluded its 2010 season on Friday
with a 3-1 loss to Bridgeport in the first round of the NCAA
Division II Tournament in Albany, N.Y. The Ravens, seeded fourth in
this year's national tournament, finished the campaign with a
14-6-1 record. The Purple Knights, seeded fifth, improved to 14-3-2
and advanced to Sunday's second round where they will take on No.
1-nationally ranked Saint Rose.
Franklin Pierce junior forward Amanda Panaro (Rockland,
Mass.) scored the lone goal for the Ravens, as it was her
team and Northeast-10 Conference-leading 20th tally of the season.
Her goal came in the 24th minute and answered Bridgeport's opening
tally just six minutes earlier.
Panaro scored the goal with a blast from 20 yards out after she
tracked down a lob pass from senior back Kelly Weygand
(Bridgewater, Mass.), who earned the assist on the play in
her final collegiate match. Weygand's assist came just days after
she earned the NE-10 Defensive Player-of-the-Week award for the
second time this season.
The Ravens held a 12-8 advantage in shots, including a 7-5 edge in
shots on goal.
However, Bridgeport was able to blast in a pair of goals in the
second half, including one in the first 30 seconds of the stanza,
to earn the 3-1 victory. Linda Velaj scored all three goals for the
Purple Knights to record the hat-trick.
Ravens' goalkeeper Jocelyn Leon (Lenox, Mass.)
made two saves while suffering the loss. Despite the setback, Leon
did post a solid 13-6-1 record on the year.
