Women's Soccer Advances to NE-10 Championship with 4-2 Win at Merrimack
Weygand scores twice in win
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (November 4, 2010) -- The Franklin
Pierce University women's soccer team downed Merrimack, 4-2, on
Thursday afternoon in North Andover, Mass., in the Northeast-10
Semifinals. The third-seeded Ravens improved to 14-4-1, while the
second-seeded Warriors fell to 12-5-3. The Ravens will now face
top-seeded Saint Rose in the NE-10 Championship game on Sunday at 1
p.m. in Albany, N.Y.
Senior back Kelly Weygand (Bridgewater, Mass.)
scored twice, while senior midfielder Shona Franklin
(Birmingham, England) and junior forward Amanda
Panaro (Rockland, Mass.) scored the other two tallies for
the Ravens.
Franklin Pierce found itself trailing 1-0 just three minutes in,
but Weygand responded just three minutes later with her first goal
of the campaign to knot the match at 1-1.
The see-saw opening minutes continued in the 10th minute when
Merrimack went up 2-1 on a goal by Khara Roman.
The match settled down into a normal pace for a majority of the
rest of the half. However, Franklin Pierce added one more wrinkle
to the stanza in the 42nd minute when it tied the contest at 2-2
off a goal from Panaro. The goal was Panaro's team and
league-leading 19th of the season. Freshman midfielder
Jannice Sundqvist (Harnosand, Sweden) assisted on
the goal.
That goal propelled the Ravens in the second half as they scored
twice to pull off the come-from-behind victory. Weygand scored in
the 67th minute to make it 3-2, and Franklin capped the scoring in
the 88th minute with a goal off a nice pass from Sundqvist.
Franklin Pierce out-shot Merrimack by a count of 17-8, including
putting eight on goal. Junior goalkeeper Jocelyn Leon
(Lenox, Mass.) made three saves to earn the win and run
her record to 13-4-1 on the season.
