Women's Soccer Closes Out Regular Season with 3-2 Come-From-Behind Win at Saint Anselm
Aya Noguchi gets game-winner; Amanda Panaro scores her conference-leading 18th goal of the season
EPPING, N.H. (October 27, 2010) -- The Franklin Pierce
University women's soccer team closed out its 2010 regular season
on Wednesday afternoon with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over
Saint Anselm in Epping, N.H. The Ravens concluded the regular
season with a 12-4-1 overall record and a 10-4-1 mark in
Northeast-10 play. The Hawks concluded their season with a 5-10-1
mark and a 5-9-1 record in league action.
Franklin Pierce found itself trailing 1-0 early following a Saint
Anselm goal in the 14th minute from Emma Furlone. The Hawks
continued to hold the lead heading into halftime and in the early
stages of the second half.
However, Franklin Pierce regrouped and exploded for three goals in
a 13-minute stretch to grab hold of the lead at 3-1 and never look
back in earning the win.
Freshman midfielder Jannice Sundqvist (Hamosand,
Sweden) got the first tally for the Ravens as she scored
in the 70th minute unassisted. For Sundqvist, it was her fifth goal
of the season, which is tops on the team for a freshman.
The second Franklin Pierce goal came just three minutes later as
senior midfielder Shona Franklin (Birmingham,
England) fed a terrific pass to freshman midfielder
Aya Noguchi (Tokyo, Japan), who struck a blast
into the upper portion of the goal past the out-stretched arms of
the Saint Anselm goalkeeper. It was the second goal of the season
for Noguchi.
Sundqvist factored into her team's third and final goal in the
83rd minute when she served up a nice pass to junior forward
Amanda Panaro (Rockland, Mass.), who slipped a
shot into the back of the net for her 18th tally of the season,
which is tops on the team and the most in the Northeast-10 for the
regular season.
Saint Anselm did score a goal in the 87th minute to make things
interesting, but Franklin Pierce's backs made sure that was the
only goal late as they yielded no shots the rest of the way.
Franklin Pierce out-shot Saint Anselm by a count of 23-4,
including putting 12 shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper
Jocelyn Leon (Lenox, Mass.) made one save to earn
the win to conclude her regular season with a 11-4-1 record.
The Ravens will now get ready to host a quarterfinal round match
in the 2010 Northeast-10 Playoffs on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in
Sodexo Field. The opponent is still to be determined.
