Women's Soccer Picks Up Third-Straight Win with 1-0 Triumph at Southern Connecticut
Amanda Panaro scores 14th goal of the season and moves into a tie for first place in the NE-10 in goals scored
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (October 16, 2010) -- The
Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team picked up its
third-consecutive win on Saturday night with a 1-0 triumph over
Southern Connecticut State in New Haven. The Ravens improved to
10-3-1 overall and 8-3-1 in Northeast-10 play, while SCSU fell to
7-4-3 and 5-4-3 in league action.
Franklin Pierce managed just one shot on goal, but the Ravens made
the shot count in picking up the win. Junior forward Amanda
Panaro (Rockland, Mass.) scored the game's lone goal in
the 12th minute when she collected the ball off a corner kick from
junior midfielder Tori Gikas (Sydney, Australia)
and fired a blast past Owls' goalkeeper Olivia Heffernan.
It was Panaro's 14th of the season, which moved her into a tie for
first place in the Northeast-10 Conference in goals scored.
Franklin Pierce's defenders came up big the rest of the match to
make the goal stand up as the difference-maker. The Ravens limited
SCSU to just six shots, including only allowing three on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Jocelyn Leon (Lenox, Mass.)
made three saves to earn her second-straight win and run her record
to 9-3-1 on the campaign. It was her sixth shutout victory of the
year.
The 1-0 win on Saturday night capped an important week for the
Ravens as they went 2-0 on the road against American International
and Southern Connecticut State, two teams that are competing with
Franklin Pierce for a high seed in the upcoming Northeast-10
playoffs, which will begin on Oct. 31. Franklin Pierce also downed
AIC by the identical score of 1-0 in Springfield on Wednesday
night.
Franklin Pierce returns to action this upcoming week with the
final two home matches of the regular season in Sodexo Field. The
Ravens will play host to Stonehill on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.,
and then take on defending conference champion Saint Rose on
Saturday at 12 p.m. The Saint Rose contest marks Senior Day as the
2010 Senior Class will be honored prior to the start of the
match.
